Could I make a pitch for just a leeetle bit more estrogen in this quiz? I think both Mary Cassatt and Frida Kahlo are famous enough for this list, no? (And just to throw in a dark horse, I nominate Yayoi Kusama – who people think they don't know but whose work they would immediately recognize – just because she's so delightfully weird.)
I would say Artemisia Gentileschi (the first female member of the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence) and perhaps Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, portraitist of Marie-Antoinette and also did portraits for Catherine the great and many other high placed people.
Came here to say Gentileschi as well, though outside of an art education she still isn't a person I would consider having a "household" name, for reasons not of her own making :/
Cassatt is fairly famous but not as famous as anyone on the list. And even those that have heard of her or even recognize her work would be hard pressed to name one of her paintings.
