According to Wikipedia, the most up-to-date name is "Republic of the Union of Myanmar", which was changed from the "Union of Myanmar". Naypyidaw has always been its capital since November 6, 2005. Also according to Wikipedia, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka moved its capital from Colombo to Sri Jayewardenepura-Kotte on April 29, 1982. Hopefully that cleared everything up for everyone as it did for me. Although, the name should be changed from Burma to Myanmar.
It's not true that Burma and Myanmar are pronounced the same. I've been there in 2014 and many natives prefer the name of Myanmar (and pronounce it just the way we do), because the Burmese are only one of the tribes/people that live in Myanmar.
Where do/did you go to school? My teacher taught me there were only 3 Asian capitals to remember (Beijing, Moscow, and Tokyo) and 33% of them weren't even in Asia.
So... if there is a bridge over the canal, is it connected again?
Same goes for the americas, they are connected, but the Panama Canal divides them...
And does the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal (outside of Germany also known as Kiel-Canal) make the most northern part of Germany and the non-island-part of Denmark into an island?
I'm sure there are more examples, isn't there a canal through Scotland? (but Great Britain already is an island anyways...)
Maybe we should correct the continent-count and declare the new supercontinent of Eurasfrica...
Yerevan and Ankara are in Asia, so Armenia and Turkey are out.
Baku IS actually in Europe, so Azerbaijan should be in the Europe capitals quiz (since these quizzes are about capitals, not about the country itself).
As for Cyprus, it is an island, so we measure by the closest landmass, which is Turkey. Since we already decided that Turkey is in Asia, Cyprus is in Asia too.
Azerbaijan and Georgia are all trans-continental Eurasian countries, so they do belong in Europe, but they belong in Asia as well. Cyprus is an island that is closest to the Arabian Peninsula, which is in the Middle East, which is in Asia, therefore, Cyprus is Asian. Armenia doesn't even touch the Europe-Asia border like it's previously mentioned neighbors to the north, and it's in Asia, therefore, Armenia is also Asian.
the causacus countries are not Europe. Istanbul is in both continents so that makes mainland turkey mostly asia, it wouldn't make sense if they were all suddenly europe because that would kind of make the middle east europe which is not. Istanbul and an unclear line through western Russia is the border
Jerusalem has always been the official capital of Israel, but most other countries recognize Tel Aviv as the capital and have embassies there because they don't want to upset Muslims. This has particularly been true since 1967 when Israel annexed East Jerusalem, which had previously been annexed by Jordan.
Many countries are waiting to see what happens with a two state solution so they're keeping embassies in Tel Aviv, but Jerusalem will still be Israel's capital even if there are two states so it seems odd to have embassies there confusing people!
its not up to other countries to decide the capital. israel claims their capital is Jerusalem and manage everything from Jerusalem. Where America puts its embassy is pretty irrelavant
Azerbaijan and Georgia are transcontinental, that means they have area on two continents: Europe and Asia. They still have more area and population in Asia so they're considered Asian countries. The same goes for Turkey.
Cyprus and Armenia don't have any territory in Europe, geographically they're completely in Asia. They're just in the same economic region as Europe along with Azerbaijan and Georgia.
I'd call it Burma, not Myanmar because the language and script the language uses. The people are called Burmese. Myanmar is just what the military government that wants you to call it.
Exactly! Despite Russia having the majority of it's territory in Asia, the majority of said territory is uninhabitable, so by that logic, Russia is European because the majority of it's population lies in the more inhabitable European territory.
If you're trying to be as accurate as possible in using the corrected sri lankan capital then you also have to call burma myanmar, despite the political implications. It would make more sense to accept colombo and yangon.
Cyprus is in the EU because it is in the same economical region but for islands and figuring out their continents we measure by closest land mass which is turkey, although turkey is partially in Europe most of it's area and population are in Asia as well as it's capital so Cyprus would be considered Asian though sometimes included in European quizzes.
EU is an economic group, it has nothing to do with the geographical boundaries of a country. (And, neither does the Eurosongfestival!)
EU, formally known as EEC I wonder if it was stilled called EEC people would be coming with the same argument. Maybe the u throws them of and subconsciously think it equates to Europe.
And ow yea, have you heard, the UK and norway are not in europe, they are not in the EU afterall, so how could they be..
Man! Just missing two now: Qatar and Bahrain's capitals. Finally nailed down Brunei and Myanmar (oh, sorry, Burma), though. And, last but not least, I spelled Sri J............. ..... right on the first try.
Okay, I have a question. I have seen the capital of Oman (Mascat) spelt three different ways. I've seen it spelt Muscat, Mascat, and Masqat. I know Masqat is probably the Arabic-English translation of it, but I don't know if any other nations spell it differently. Is Muscat the correct spelling of it, or are all of them correct answers?
The correct spelling is مسقط. The other you list are all transliterations using English/Roman letters, and there's not necessarily one that is more correct than the others, though Muscat is the most common spelling as far as I know.
THANK YOU 1000 times over! I had enough time to finish my first time! I know all of these but my scores sit around in the area where those who score under 100 on IQ tests are roped off (it's such fun in this section--we discuss whether the moon is a sun or a planet like the hosts on QVC, and what about Pluto?...how scientists fooled us unto believing global warming was real when it was really cold last night...all sorts of fun topics are reserved for us in the brain dead section).... simply because I cannot type faster. My right hand is a mess from carpal tunnel anyway..too numb to type. No one knows I can't type, unless I come here to play the speed typing tests disguised as Name the Countries and Name the Capitals--and they just make me feel dumb--no one else is looking. This is the very first I just clicked on one, (did not have to undo the timer) because I know I have learned them, and I completed them all 1st time!! TY so much! That was fun!
Accepting Bandar for Bandar Seri Begawan is like accepting 'City' for 'Kuwait City', since it is just the Malay word for city (or perhaps it is more closely equivalent to accepting 'Ciudad' for Mexico City). I feel like if all you know is Bandar, you can't really claim to know the capital of Brunei.
I can correctly spell Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, but it always tooks me dozens of tries before remembering the correct spelling of Naypyidaw. What's wrong with me???
So, question, if Delhi can be accepted for New Delhi as the capital of India, then why can't Colombo be accepted for Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte as the capital of Sri Lanka? Aren't both capitals suburbs of the main city?
Although they're in the same metro area, Colombo and Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte are separate municipalities with different local governments and mayors.
Cyprus is in Europe - period. And no, not just any nation can become part of the E.U. and that includes the U.S. The traditional geograaphic boundary between europe and asia is Istanbul and the Ural Mountains. It has been that way for centuries. I have no idea where one gets the idea that Cyprus is in Asia!
Proof (or not) that I support (or not) your claim. Also, sorry for the link... https://www.google.com/search?q=map+of+world+with+continent+lines&rlz=1C1GGRV_enUS754US754&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=ddUK5TK2rfbhcM%253A%252CF57khFvbszca9M%252C_&usg=__R5cp6eboJsmgL0fugMxDjVggbOk%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwie8svUtdHYAhVJ61MKHcyHCP0Q9QEIMTAE#imgrc=OO1gLxCZjAHFWM: copy and paste that baby
as you said the border is istanbul. Cyprus is much further east as its directly south of Ankara and you wouldn't consider ankara europe. therefore cyrpus is asia
Why isn't Russia on this list? A massive proportion of its area sits in Asia. I know the capital is on the European continent, but to me that is just wrong.
Jetpunk says Asia. But the boundaries between Africa/Europe/Asia are effectively a social construct anyway. Turkey has more in common with Greece geographically than it does with Japan, Sri Lanka or Singapore. And Egypt has more in common with Jordan than it does with Madagascar. We have to put the boundaries somewhere and in cases like Cyprus, Georgia or Russia there are going to be complaints either way.
Cyprus is one of the great islands of the Mediterranean Sea (along with Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica and Crete), the most eastern of all, located between the southern coast of Anatolia and the Mediterranean coast of the Middle East. Geographically, it belongs to Asia, although culturally it is a mixture of European and Asian elements, with Europeans predominating, given its Greek past and the current two thirds of the population of Greek origin.
The delineation between Asia and Europe is fuzzy at best. For JetPunk purposes, Cyprus and Turkey are in Asia and Russia is in Europe.
There are quizzes that mention that Istanbul straddles both continents and that Siberia is Asian, but in general some arbitrary decisions need to be made for consistency, especially for continental vaguenesses. Heck, there are all sorts of debates over just the number and names of continents.
Aden recently became the capital of Yemen as the government isn't in control of Sanaa anymore. Just look at google maps or wikipedia - Aden is recognized as the capital.
zoom in close on Google maps and you'll see two dots for capital cities right next to each other, though it's the same city not even 2 miles across both of them. Zoom out and the two dots merge in to one, and Kotte disappears so that all that remains is Colombo.
Colombo really should be accepted as the capital of Sri Lanka like Amsterdam being accepted as the capital of Netherlands instead of Den Haag and Kuala Lumpur being accepted as the capital of Malaysia instead of Putrajaya despite the fact that both Netherlands and Malaysia keeps most of their political branch in Den Haag and Putrajaya respectively. Besides, Colombo still has the PM's house and office, President's house and office, and the Supreme Court which gives a considerable legitimacy for Colombo to be called 'a' political capital of Sri Lanka out of their two capitals. Also, all my Sri Lankan friends (I live in India so I have a lot of them) says that Colombo is their capital because... it really is for them. (Plus, Kotte is in the metro area of Colombo so it really makes Kotte seem much more insignificant than Colombo for them) It's not important what the government is saying: do you type Czechia or Czech Republic? Czech government want us to call them Czechia but who does?
I type Czechia because it's shorter. I think the situation with The Hague is a little bit different. Not familiar with Putrajaya. But agree on Colombo.
I think Jetpunk should add Tel Aviv as an option (or type-in) for the capital of Israel, so that it for example says Tel Aviv/Jerusalem. The vast majority of countries recognize Tel Aviv as the capital, not Jerusalem, so I think that should by all means at least be an option.
A country can't decide the capital of another country. Israel says that their capital is Jerusalem, so all the other countries should respect that. For example Belgium can't just randomly decide that DC shouldn't be the capital of USA and that they should change it to New York.
If palestine isn't a country, why google maps ever write it as a country? Why is there so much history about Palestine as a country? why many countries recognize it as a state?
2) See Wikipedia. "Palestine (Arabic: فلسطين, romanized: Filasṭīn), officially the State of Palestine[a] (Arabic: دولة فلسطين, romanized: Dawlat Filasṭīn) is a de jure sovereign state," although I do see your point.
3) Read Jetpunk standards, and read about the Big 5. You'll realize 3 out the 5 don't recognize Palestine.

Wow, this took me soooo long to memorize. This was way harder than the flags.
Its funny cause both memorizing the names of the Stans and its capitals, were really tough for me to learn them, yet once you learn them, they're super easy to remember. While some of these others, even easy ones I space exactly. Surprisingly the Middle East was pretty easy, once got a hang of it, a lot of easy words to spell.
I now know every country in world, and for flags and capitals know them all except Africa. I'm gonna take the world quiz without knowing it, just like I did the flags, and see if I can get everything.
I realized I just need to know Kotte to get it because that's what it's commonly shortened to. Though I do recall on some quizzes it counts it if you do the first few letters like Sri Jay
U_U
Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan

B) This is a bit long, but I shouldn't complain.
Just like you can call Panama City Panama.
It's like having Egypt in Asia because of Sinai.

(and San Juan too, ;) )
Colombo WAS the capital until the 80s
Kotte is so hard to spell. I have a world map colombo is the capital
And I'm done! That was an easy quiz,

And also Turkiye, Cyprus and Georgia are in Europe.
And Russia is in Europe and Asia. (Same for Georgia, Turkiye and Cyprus)
