I've always had to describe the cassowary to my foreign friends as 'if you cross an emu with a peacock'. My language is usually a little more colourful, but they always understand. A French friend didn't believe me when I told him to stay away from the cassowary - until the bird broke his camera and cut his arm. Boy can run! LOL.

I couldn't remember the name for wombat; I kept thinking wallaby. Shouldn't irukandji be accepted for the box jellyfish?

I thought that too for the irukandji.

Doesn't irukandji just refer to the species of box jelly that's no bigger than the end of your little finger?

No wallaby? No possum?

I was hoping to see a possum, too. Until I began taking quizzes on this site I never knew Australia has an animal called a possum, as opposed to our American opossum which most of us call a possum anyway.

A regular wonderland, Australia. No tigers, lions, wolves or bears to maul you and chew your liver... but every other dangerous thing on earth. Snakes, scorpions, spiders, great white sharks, crocodiles, box jellyfish (also called sea wasps there) and drop bears. Even the cuddly-looking platypus has a poisonous spur on one of its feet. Agonising to get jabbed I have heard. A man was feeding his pigeons in Queensland about 10 years ago. Got bitten by a 'coastal' taipan. He made it back into his house to call assistance. They found him lying dead with the 'phone in his hand.
