I'm a 40 years old french-speaking Belgian (from Wallonie), I've spent my life watching TV shows, news, movies, reading (a lot) in French, I've never seen or heard autopiste ever.
I am a French-speaking Canadian and I can assure you no one uses "autopiste". Our multi-lane, exit-limited roadways are called "autoroutes" just as they are in France. "Autopiste" sounds like a back-translation of the Spanish word "autopista".
I would say automotive is the ability of something to move on it own, while an automobile is the thing that "moves on its own". The clue asks for a vehicle.
