Back in the day, my little sister misheard, and innocently started referring to him as the "Big Eunuch." Which was so hilarious I couldn't bring myself to correct her. All these years later, I still can't hear his name without chuckling :) Ah, kids...
Somewhat sour grapes as this is the only one I got wrong, but Gaylord to Spit was illegal and Wakefield to knuckle was not. Don't really think they are analogous. Maybe Rivera to cutter or Suter to splitfinger would be more appropriate. Unless you switched it around and said Brett for pine tar, or Sosa for steroids.
They are analogous. Gaylord Perry was famous for throwing a ___ball, and Tim Wakefield was famous for throwing a ____ball. Mariano River didn't throw a "cutterball.' He just threw a cutter. And besides, cutters, splitfingers, etc. are thrown by lots of people. Perry and Wakefield each specialized in a pitch that only a handful of guys throw. The only knuckleballer I can think of since Wakefield is R.A. Dickey.
But I LOVED the Phillies clues :) GO PHILS!!!
Not the same as the players aren't cheating if the ball is juiced, but the player himself corks his bat.
