I would have preferred a quetzal picture that shows the tail

After 6 years of searching, he finally came up with the ultimate photo! It was a long and dangerous quest, one that took Quizmaster to the four corners of the internet, but against all odds, he prevailed

I know the image source says that the depicted bird is a Common gull and not a Mew gull, but some authorities consider Mew gull to be the name for the whole species (rather than just the American subspecies), so I think that should be accepted as a type-in.

Also, the depicted species of Quetzal is a Golden-headed Quetzal. Thought you'd like to know as you included the species name in all other cases.

Agree! Common Gull in the UK, Mew Gull elsewhere - either should be accepted, just not 'seagull'!

With a bit more yellow, the blue jay would be a blue tit.

And with a bit more orange the emperor penguin would be a king penguin.

The perennial question of whether people cheat gathers steam by anything above a tiny percent getting quetzal.

The success rate of some questions/answers definitely leaves you scratching your head, but then I remember ones like this that just seem obvious to me. But that's because I've collected world coins since I was a kid, and Guatemala's currency is quetzals, named for the national bird, which featured on most of their coinage for years.

Whenever I see an answer that is correctly guessed at a suspiciously high %, I try to remember that this site attracts people that frequently have wide-ranging areas of expertise and interest. What might seem incredibly obscure for the population in general, may not necessarily be so obscure to the JetPunk audience.

...which isn't to say there aren't folks on here who, for whatever reason, just need to get perfect scores (by whatever means necessary) on every quiz they take.

My sister lived in Guatemala for a year; I visited her there and brought home a pair of silver earrings shaped like quetzals-- the bird, not the bank note. You never know how someone might have come across a bit of information.

The last one was obviously a white heron, but that didn't work. I looked it up, and one of the names for the great egret is great white heron.

Oh, okay, interesting. Apparently "White heron" is a term used to refer to the several species of herons (i.e., bird in the family Ardeidae) that are white. This would include species such as the Snowy Egret or Great Egret.

So perhaps (Great) White Heron might be a suitable typein.

Alright, so it's not that one that you call Barnacle Goose in English... (we call it "Bernache du Canada" in French)

They're two different species. Barnacle goose has a white forehead and black and grey stripes on its back, and is smaller than the Canada goose which has a black forehead and a brown body.
