Since you accidentally put Less Antilles in the instructions rather than Lesser Antilles, I assume you're talking about the Antilles of which there are fewer.
Like the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands are not in the Caribbean as traditionally defined. The Caribbean is bordered by South America, Central America, Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and the Lesser Antilles down to Trinidad.
Hi! Looking from northern Europe BAHAMAS is connected to the Carribean sea, and Wikipedia writes that way, too. Take a look, and have a great Day;)! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Countries_in_the_Caribbean
What does it matter where you are "looking from"? QM clearly defined the area considered to be the Carribean for the purpose of this quiz. The Bahamas clearly do not fit the criteria. Doesn't mean other definitions would exclude it.
I thought it was st eustachius. (at least in the local language) but guess I was wrong. A weird varation, not what you expect the word to be looking at similar words in dutch. I guess I had buis van eustachius/eustachian tube in my mind.
Not in the Caribbean. The world's oceans and seas are defined by an international body called the International Hydrographic Organization, and the Bahamas is clearly outside their internationally-agreed definition of what constitutes the Caribbean Sea. Look up the Caribbean Sea on Wikipedia, there is a link to the definition.
That's quite understandable because Mexico (and the gulf of Mexico) is not automatically though of as being part of the Caribbean. And since it is in this quiz, it opens a Pandora's Box, doesn't it? For, if you include Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize how can you exclude the gulf states of the US? (Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and Florida?)
Because all three of Mexico, Guatemala and Belize are (at least somewhat) *south* of the Gulf of Mexico’s coast, which only extends as far as the top of the Yucatán peninsula.
Mexico, however, continues south from this point as far as the border with Belize, and it’s this bit of coast that touches the Caribbean.
It''s called Caribbean Countries and Territories, and includes things that just border on the Caribbean Sea. Those aren't the same thing. I've never heard Mexico called a Caribbean country, and Guyana, Suriname and French Guyana are often included in cultural definitions, because of the close historical ties between them and the islands.
No need to get snappy, it isnt personal is it? He has a point, the title could have been chosen better. And just be "places that border the caribbean". Because mexico, colombia etc are indeed not considered caribbean countries, and that is what the title suggests.
I got what was meant though, the titles on this site are so often wrong if you take them literally. The description in the quiz itself usually is correct though. So I dont let myself be guided by the title, but see what it is really about after I click it.
I agree adding a map would be very nice for this one. A map with just sea (or perhaps the us as an anchorpoint) where the countries/territories show up after you guess them.
There are other territories of the United States that are in the Caribbean Sea but are disputed. Navassa Island, Bajo Nuevo Bank, and Serranilla Bank all fall under this category. Maybe you should add a disclaimer that disputed US claims don't count? Just a suggestion
Shouldn't these following countries and whatnot; Navassa Island, Guantamano Bay, Provindencia, Santa Catalina and San Andrés, Federal Venezuelan Dependencies and the KINGDOM of the Netherlands, be included in the quiz? And also, who currently claims Bajo Nuevo Bank and Serranilla Bank? And, as they are disputed, should these be added to the list of Caribbean things? If someone could bust my additions to the list and answer my questions I'd thank him a lot.
though... from the perspective of the present-day Cuban government... the 1903 lease of Guantanamo to the US, which has no set expiration date, was signed under duress and is therefore invalid. Though the US government keeps sending the Cuban government checks for the lease of the land as per the agreement, the Cubans have only ever cashed one of those checks since 1974, and the Cubans call this an illegal occupation. In spite of Jack Nicholson's concerns, however, the Cubans lack the military power or political capital to do anything about this.
If we're not including the US, the Bahamas, or the Turks and Caicos, we shouldn't include Barbados either. It lies a good ways outside the neat boundary drawn by the Lesser Antilles.
The eastern border of the Caribbean is where the lesser antilles and Trinidad and Tobago meet Venezuela. Guyana, Suriname, and French Guyana are east of that so they don't border the Caribbean.
i think you are mistaken, bermuda is on the same latitude as north carolina, really far north from the carribean, but yeah idk why bahamas isnt included
According to Wikipedia, Turks and Caicos Islands is actually not in the Caribbean Sea. It's in the Atlantic Ocean. It's like Bahamas. The reason why Turks and Caicos is not considered a territory in the Caribbean Sea is because it's southeast of the Bahamas, which the Bahamas is not in the Caribbean Sea but in the Atlantic Ocean. Great question.
Didn't read the fine print. Thought this was Caribbean as considered by Caribbean people, not just countries that border an arbitrary line. Does anyone know a quiz of Caribbean countries? For some reason I can't find one. (one that excludes continental countries and includes Bahamas). Thanks!
Why is Bermuda and Turks and Caicos Islands not here? and also why is the Bahamas not here? plus Belize,Colombia,Costa Rica,Guatemala,Honduras,Mexico,Nicaragua,Panama and Venezuela is not in the Caribbean and also there is regions of those countries that are not in the Carribean like Central America, North America and South America plus good quiz!
Bermuda, Turks and Caicos islands, and the Bahamas are in the atlantic. Colombia + central america all border the caribbean which is what the quiz is about
Both The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos are members of the Caribbean Community, an intergovernmental organization that is a political and economic union of 15 member states, Bahamas as a full member and T&C as an associate. I feel like if they identify themselves as Caribbean they should be included.
