You should allow chicken. In Chinese they don't specify that it is a male chicken. In fact, they often say it is a sign of wealth because chickens lay many eggs - so clearly it is actually a hen.

If I remember right, each year should avoid the animal that is both three before and three after their own year, thus forming 4 triads that should avoid each other: Rat, Dragon, Monkey; Ox, Snake, Rooster; Tiger, Horse, Dog; and Rabbit, Goat, Pig.
