When I visited Hong Kong I took a 45 minute ferry ride to Lantau Island. We found ourselves in a small village where water buffalo wandered freely on the streets - just 10 miles from the skyscrapers on Hong Kong island.
The islandpeninsula known as Macau is completely urbanized, but the two other islands, Taipa and Coloane are not. Land reclamation has made the area a lot different than when I lived there!
The current area of Macau is just about 30 kilometer square. Yet, its reclamation is in progress, so the size may have a significant increase afterwards.
It's already much bigger than it was thirty years ago. A walk from the tip of the peninsula to the Chinese sort-of border takes about an hour. It was pretty roomy for the Portuguese, however, compared to what the Dutch had in Nagasaki.
I think that's right. Accurate numbers are really tough to come by anyway, since there are regulations guiding internal migration and the Pearl River Delta is the major manufacturing hub, so lots of people live there unofficially and may not be counted. I've seen estimates for the region of 60-120 million and I think these unofficial residents account for the bulk of the discrepancy in the guess work.
Only know Zhuhai because of the bridge being built to connect it with Macau and Hong Kong. When is that due to be opened again? *retreats down rabbit hole*
Got all right!
People who visited their a lot for their vacation / holiday will get all of them like me. But good try on the quiz! 👏👏👏
