I did make one change to the FAO data to remove Venezuela. Venezuela doesn't have a strong agricultural sector and actually imports much of their food. But the FAO data don't reflect this. Why? My guess is that it has to do with the fact that the "official" exchange between Bolivars and Dollars is 10/1, while the actual market value is over 1000/1.
I only guessed Mauritius because I just read about how vanilla is one of the most expensive crops, and Mauritius is one of the countries that grows it. It looks like their main crop is sugar cane though.
I was surprised that Chile wasn't on the second list. Small population relatively and a bunch of high value fruit crops. Or is it just considering the value of cereal crops? If it's just the cereal crops then it probably should be mentioned in the title. If it's just cereal crops does it include cereal that is grown as fodder or just for human consumption?
I think it's all crops, NZ doesn't grow many cereal crops for example. A lot of that would be coming from grapes (for wine) or kiwifruit. From the FAOSTAT world food and agriculture statistical pocketbook, NZ exports $1.8 billion worth of fruit and vegetables, but only $0.4 billion worth of cereal. Chile does export $6 billion worth of fruit and vegetables, but is a net importer of cereal and has 5 times the population.
The title and caveat do not really match. Agricultural production is both crop and livestock. Crop production is not livestock.
It would therefore be interesting to learn what has been taken into consideration. With or with livestock would make the list very different.
I am also wondering if the value is what it has actually been sold for or is there a standard on what a certain standard value per quantity over the world.
