I actually went to Armenia and saw the churches there! Most of them are built into the ground and you can only enter and exit via a ladder built into the ground. It's really cool and Armenia has a surprisingly long and rich history!
I don't think "most" is accurate... but there are many old Christian churches in the places where the religion first took hold that are built into the landscape.. co-opting caves or cellars, or hewn out of cliffs or hills. You can find them in Ethiopia, Armenia, Turkey, and Israel, among other places. The one in Armenia I've been to is called Geghard, in Kotayk. It claims to have the lance of Longinus, the spear that pierced Christ's side, though like with all religious relics, authenticity is questionable at best and there are competing claims, including from the Vatican.
I only learnt recently that Armenia was the first country to officially adopt Christanity... and its alphabet was invented by a man with the marvellous name of Mesrop Mashtots, who translated the Bible into Armenian.
Who else was looking forward to a Cyprus trick question?
