Important: must read. Sovereign countries that existed as of September 1, 1939

So Russia isn't accepted for Soviet Union? That's what I typed and eventually gave up. I know the Soviet Union wasn't Russia back then, but still . . . can you make a type-in?
+16
Level 65

The Soviet Union's full name was the "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics" and never included "Russia" (disregarding pre-USSR) in its name until 1991. Plus, "Russia" was not the only part of the whole Soviet Union, it also included present-day European and Asian countries.

That's being overly pedantic. It was the successor of the Russian Empire as a politically operating entity (which included the same present-day European and Asian countries, plus MORE), and the modern Russian state is considered the successor of the Soviet Union. So yes, I think Russia should be accepted as a type-in.

If you only want to accept the ‘Soviet Union’ for Russia than you should also only accept ‘Nazi Germany’ and not Germany.

Just gonna use this as a copy-paste for people who think like this: the Soviet Union's full name was the "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics" and never included "Russia" (disregarding pre-USSR) in its name until 1991. Plus, "Russia" was not the only part of the whole Soviet Union, it also included present-day European and Asian countries.

Interesting to see that although colonial countries in the British Empire that contributed troops (such as the ANZAC nations) are counted, the non-White ones aren't as they were often just not counted. 2.5 million Indian troops served in the British Army, and 87,000 died. They deserve to be on that list. The same with many colonies : 15,000 Ethiopian ones, 57,000 Filipino military. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II_casualties

Please update :)

It's all about the status of the different parts of the Empire at the time: Australia, NZ, South Africa and Canada were all self-governing dominions, i.e. independent nations. India and most of the other parts of the Empire did not have dominion status and were still ruled (ultimately) from London.

So I don't know about Norway but with Denmark they basically let Germany invade them and did not resist at all meaning they would not have military deaths. However some died during the occupation but it was only 3000 and they were not military deaths.

Instead of saying "ROC and China", it's better to say "China and CCP". Because during WWII, Chiang's ROC government was recognized as China, China before 1949 should be ROC by default. The world began to call ROC as Taiwan after its withdrawal from the UN in 1971.

These are sovereign countries at the start of the war, so if the Baltics were annexed in August 1940, they would still have been independent at the start.

Czechoslovakia should be included. As someone pointed out, Slovakia is not on the list, since it was not recognised by allies and neither is the Protectorate -> Czechoslovakia government existed and was recognised, if only in exile.

The list should be consistent, as it is it is erasing contributions and suffering of Czechoslovakia (and other countries). It should either include Protectorate and Slovakia as separate entities or as Czechoslovakia, not ommit them altogether.

More so, the number of casualties for China counts casualties since 1937.
