Re: Cabo Verde and Cote D'Ivoire. Both of these countries have issued official statements declaring that these are the names by which they would like to be called, which is why the convention is to call them by these names. Cabo Verde's was very recent (http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2013/12/131212-maps-cabo-verde-cartography-science-cape-verde-africa/). It might be outside the scope of this conversation to discuss why they feel so strongly about that, but, in any case, the governments of Cabo Verde and Cote D'Ivoire have specifically stated they do not want to be called Cape Verde or Ivory Coast, respectively.
Got them all EXCEPT Cuba. Eesh. Can't believe I forgot it, especially since I usually work left to right and north to south in geography quizzes (so, North America and the Caribbean, then south america, then europe, africa, asia, oceania)
But that's incorrect. I call it Ivory Coast because even those I can speak French it's what I grew up with. But it is not the Ivory Coast. That's wrong. Whether you want to call it that or not. If half the population calls water, "lava," it is still factually water. Not lava.
It's not exactly the same, because within international documents written in English (or, for example, in the corresponding UN seat) it is written Cote d'Ivoire and South Korea.
sometimes it is interesting and entertaining, sometimes it is annoying and nasty. Either way, I often cant resist to read them (unless they are over 100..or about things I ve read thousands times before, like if england is a country. I read those type of discussions in about 5 different threads and then Im quite done with them)
A recently deposed Prime Minister of my country once referred to Canada as Canadia. Of course he was an idiot, but he was a democratically elected idiot. Just keep that in mind USA, as the Trump mobile gathers steam towards the White House. But then, Trump is not really stupid. The contradictory statements, conflicting moral viewpoints and apparent confusion are all a part of his campaign strategy. Michael Moore may well be right when he says that only satire can bring him down(of course, he is a satirist), and that brains and logic are useless against him.
Why is Dem Rep of the Congo and Rep of the Congo in brackets, but China isn't. I don't think either of them should be in brackets and already guessed; or you should do Peoples Republic of China, etc. Good to see Cote d'Ivoire though
Because China is more commonly known as China while the other ones are recognized as those. They also have to have a way to be able to tell which country is which.
He was joking... unless he's a rabid Cornish nationalist who's deluded himself into thinking that Cornwall (as many people wish it to be) is independent.
Curacao was never part of Venezuela. Liberator Simon Bolivar fled to Curacao when the tide turned against him, but the island was never owned by Venezuela. There is a refinery on the island (Isla) that refined Venezuelan crude oil, but I think that even that has now been sold.
In a previous comment, which as since been deleted, someone said that Curacao was once owned by Venezuela. If not, I would not have made the correction.
I don't think it's so much a sense of entitlement or poor spelling skills as not remembering which spellings and names are now considered correct. Changes are occurring all the time. We are taught one thing in school, such as Peking, Bombay, Ivory Coast, etc., and then a new group comes to power and decides to change it or a new spelling is considered closer to how the country's citizens spell it, so suddenly we're all terrible people if we don't immediately make the change. And then, sometimes, just as quickly the winds change and the previous name is back in favor. Regardless, there's no need to get so angry at people who have problems spelling - have you considered that perhaps English isn't their first language, or maybe spelling is just difficult for them? I know I find it more difficult now than when I was young, and I was considered a great speller in my young days. I appreciate QM's leniency.
I have no issue with those who have trouble spelling. What I do have an issue with is those who haughtily demand that countries accept the English spelling of their names!
i got all the countries like a little brush on my shoulders people please i tried my best i only like only got Cuba on the flipping very last second i mean like how did i get it i am so suprised if you peopledont know i am only 10 and i play fortnite so friend me this is my username mawza_king so please friend me right now i got 46 friends.
Finally got them all with 1:39 remaining at 10:36:17 pm on February 17, 2019. I took this quiz today to reach Level 30 again because the stats for Biggest Cities in the World Quiz were reset, putting me just below it again. But I have succeeded in reaching Level 30 for the second time, as my point total increased by 5 from 797 to 802.
It's ironic that those who so vehemently object to using "Cote d'Ivoire", have no problem with using "Beijing", "Kuala Lumpur", "El Salvador", "Eswatini" or "Costa Rica" among others!
Yes there are: I don't know about Kuala Lumpur but Costa Rica is "Rich Coast" and El Salvador is "The Savior" - Yet, I don't see anyone translating them into English for an "English Language" quiz!
To all the people arguing about Ivory Coast/Cote d’Ivoire and Cape/Cabo Verde, can we not just accept that there is an official name and a common name? Like the official IUPAC name isn’t diethyl ether, but that’s what everyone calls ethoxyethane
I got Central African Republic by mistake. I was missing one and thought of the Cayman Islands and went to type "Cayman" and clicked on "r" instead of "y" and got "Car." Cool. Cool cool cool.
I had 14 of them finished and Czech Republic was the last one. When I noticed that my missing one was after Cyprus, I realized It had to start with Cz. I was confused of course until I remembered Czech Republic.
besides it still accepts Cape Verde
