RogueXReaper: England is still not a sovereign country. Loads of territories have borders, a language, flag, and whatnot, but those things alone don't make a territory a sovereign country. England is part of the UK, and the UK is the sovereign country.
"England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom.[6][7][8] It shares land borders with Scotland to the north and Wales to the west. The Irish Sea lies northwest of England and the Celtic Sea lies to the southwest. England is separated from continental Europe by the North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south. The country covers five-eighths of the island of Great Britain (which lies in the North Atlantic) in its centre and south, and includes over 100 smaller named islands such as the Isles of Scilly and the Isle of Wight."
I had to look this up but apparently the last time a sovereign state named England existed was either 1603 or 1707 when the Kingdom of England officially merged with the Kingdom of Scotland and became the Kingdom of Great Britain.
To be more accurate, the Kingdom of England (which included Wales at the time) merged with the Kingdom of Scotland to form the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707. Great Britain and Ireland then joined in 1801 to from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Five-fifths of Ireland seceded from the UK in 1922 which left the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
I'm pretty sure the only reason Estonia is the most guessed country here is that people open the comment section and see Estonia mentioned in the first comment.
East Timor is not the name of the country. It's Timor-Leste. Calling it East Timor like calling the USA an A country because it's colloquially called "America."
Cote d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast) is officially the French name, which is what most of the website uses as the official answer and Ivory Coast as an alternative answer (as seen in the all countries starting with C quiz). Timor-Leste is the official name, yet East Timor is the official answer, which I think is just an inconsistency that just haven't been (probably won't be) fixed.
TL;DR The fact that East Timor is the English name literally does not matter, and it as the official answer is just a quirk of the website.
Official name of Germany is Deutschland, but that doesn't qualify it into "countries starting with D" when the quiz is in english. Most countries start with different letter in their native language.
Eire ??? And I disagree about England not being a sovereign nation. The Queen is the sovereign ruler of England etc. and whilst it forms part of the United Kingdom, it is a sovereign nation within that kingdom.
Eire is Ireland in Irish. England isn't a sovereign nation and Queen Elizabeth II is the sovereign ruler of 16 countries, which include the UK, Canada and Australia, just to name a few.
Disagree all you like, but the UK Government (you know, the institution that might know about these things) certainly doesn't think England is a sovereign country!
If England is a sovereign country then where is its government? To be sovereign it would need to have political authority, and there is no English government, only a UK one. The queen is kind of irrelevant as she has no real power and is also the queen of other sovereign countries.
To the people complaining about "East Timor" vs. "Timor-Leste:" It doesn't really matter what you call it. Eventually you'll learn to guess the country whenever you're looking for a country that starts with E or T.
England is a country, the UK is made of 4 countries England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. I am English not UKish. It also has its own flag, just like Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have as they are also countries in their own right :)
Lots of places have their own flag, not just countries - should Essex be on this quiz because it has a flag? This quiz is about sovereign nations, as recognised by the international community, it is not about subnational units that, whether due to history or by convention, are known as countries.
England definitely is a country. It's just not a sovereign one and therefore doesn't appear on the quiz. It is part of the UK which is a sovereign country.
People in the UK always seem to think that the constituent countries of the UK are independent nation-states in their own right - and I live in England. These simply make up parts of the UK, and are not countries in the way that most people, and Jet Punk, think of as countries. I get that it's confusing because they have their own sports teams, accents, culture, history, and even languages, but Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and England are part of the UK. They are not 'countries'.
What does it say on my passport? English citizen? Scottish? No, it says British
England is a region of the UK. It just so happens that the UK calls its regions "countries". Good for you, but that doesn't mean the rest of the world needs to acknowledge this as anything else than another one of those little quirks of those weirdos on their small island.
"The actual name of the sovereign state we are talking about is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK). The United Kingdom is made up of the COUNTRIES England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland"
England IS a country. If you refuse to include it because it's a part of the socio-economic union that is the United Kingdom, then you cannot include France, Germany, Spain or any of the other EU members as countries, as the EU is also a socio-economic union.
Oh please! England has not been an independent sovereign country in its own right since 1707. England is part of the United Kingdom. It really is quite sad how many people from the UK don't understand how the UK is constituted - this is basic stuff.
They actually don't understand the difference between a sovereign country and an alliance of sovereign countries. Hence Brexit and all that stupidity about "getting their sovereignty back".
Got them all, again, with 17 seconds left between 9:44 and 9:46 PM on February 21, 2019. Equatorial Guinea was the last one I typed in. Eswatini was one of the first I typed, not surprising since the change was so recent.
"Eswatini (Swazi: eSwatini [ɛswa̯ˈtiːni]), officially the Kingdom of Eswatini (Swazi: Umbuso weSwatini) and also known as Swaziland, is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. It is bordered by Mozambique to its northeast and South Africa to its north, west and south."
Learnt something today - thank you. eSwatini - is the 'new' name proclaimed by their King for Swaziland - in 2018. I'm guessing most quizzes will now include the new name for Swaziland along with Swaziland.
I would argue that "El Salvador" should be classed as beginning with S, not E. You don't class the United Kingdom as beginning with "T", for example, do you?
Re UK - no you don’t, because The is not part of its official name. Whereas El is a part of El Salvador’s. Fortunate that Washington follows UK’s example, otherwise 328 million people would live in the Trumpian nation of TUSOA.
got 100% yay !! (1:05 left) I actually got east timor on a quiz !!! 99% of the times I forget it ( together with gabon and samoa, and cape verde, though since today I started getting cape verde and samoa too)
I applaud jetpunk for using Eswatini, which is the Swazi name for the country known in English as Swaziland, since the country has requested to be henceforth referred to by that name in international institutions. At some point, you'll have to explain to me why the same logic doesn't apply to Côte d'Ivoire.
Not impressed with the video you linked - the narrator is totally wrong in his commentary on views of how each country/nation sees the others. It's stereotypical in it's overtones
Somehow when my brother was trying to do this quiz, he instead typed ''England'' and got ''East Timor'' wrong even though ''England is the capital of ""London right?
there is a 55.5555555556% chance that the country will be African a 22.2222222222% chance that it will be in the Americas (both north and south) a 11.1111111111 chance that it will be European and a 11.1111111111 chance that it will be Asian
Gonna be honest I always called it Timor Leste. The creator should propably add a disclaimer telling the quiz taker that the quiz will be using exclusively the English names for countries.
lol I forgot that people call Timor-Leste east Timor, I get that they can be used interchangeably like cote d'Ivoire and ivory coast but it never even crossed my mind as being an e country
Can anyone please tell me why England is never accepted as a separate country on here. It’s always United Kingdom. United Kingdom is made up of four countries..England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It’s a bit of an insult saying United Kingdom is one country.
When the word "country" is used on this website, it probably means "sovereign state"; the UK is a sovereign state that the countries England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales are a part of.

TL;DR The fact that East Timor is the English name literally does not matter, and it as the official answer is just a quirk of the website.
Lose the apostrophe (it's = it is ). Hugs.
It's Nick Crompton's city.
Thank you and Goodnight
