I don't think amm14 was suggesting that anyone is ahead of the US. I think amm14 is saying that the second-ranking country is Switzerland, not Australia.
Not sure what source amm14 is using but the wiki page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Grand_Slam_champions_by_country shows Australia with 41 (singles) as of today. The single titles by country are currently USA 138, Australia 41, (West) Germany 32, Spain 31, Switzerland 28, Sweden 25. If you include all the doubles too and count each player separately (as there are pairs from different countries) the order is USA 487, Australia 182, Spain 65, Switzerland 54, Sweden 50, France 47
I got a little excited when I saw Australia and cheered ever so slightly, before I realised this quiz highlights that we're second in these categories... Wah!
I realise it's just my opinion but I find it terribly difficult to believe that India only has 200 million speakers of English. When I went there in 2001, everyone I spoke to in the street, including obviously very poor people, was able to speak English to some level except for one old lady. I suppose I was entirely in cities and towns. I just have my doubts over official figures - but I suppose that is all we have to go on.
And hang on - that source says that 38 million French people speak English!! Where are they all?
I lived in India for two years. There are many, many people there who can't speak English, including in the big cities. In the rural areas and provincial cities very few people can.
Yes, I suppose so. But India is so big that only 23% of the population would need to speak any English for there to be more English speakers than the whole of the USA. The urban Indian population alone is 50% larger than the total population of the USA. As India (slowly) gets richer and better educated, I find the idea that the USA has the most English speakers is getting further and further outside the bounds of credibility.
Suggest to change English (native) for English (first language). It could be argued that all countries with English as an official language have native English speakers. It's also the terminology used at the source (I guess) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_English-speaking_population
Jobs. Saudi Arabia and other gulf countries import vast armies of temporary workers to do low-wage labor. They are not really immigrants in the Western sense as they have no path to citizenship and will have to return to their home country when their economic usefulness is over.
That felt weirdly easy for how difficult it should have been for some. No idea how I got the "Highest Market value of their most valuable corporation" question.
