To anyone who ever encounters the acronym GMT: the M does NOT stand for meridian, it stands for MEAN. That means GMT is not a synonym for UTC, but a synonym for British time (with daylight saving time). So whoever made up the acronym GMT really is mean. It's safer and less confusing to use time offsets with UTC.
Yeah, I was fixated on boxers and bodybuilders for a bit. Thought my first instinct of Jack Lalanne would definitely be right. I got there eventually, only because somewhere in the deep recesses of my mind I remembered that John Wayne is a stage name.
The Crossroads of the Pacific?! I've never heard that one before. And I hate to be the one to break it to you, Hawaii, but no roads cross the Pacific! ;)
John Wayne as "the icon of American masculinity" always makes me smile...... Wayne managed to get a deferment out of service in WWII because he was married with 4 children..... then left his wife and kids. Other film stars such as Jimmy Stewart (flying combat missions over Germany) Paul Newman (gunner on torpedo boats) Kirk Douglas (anti-submarine warfare - wounded) Clark Gable (combat missions flown from England) ........... these men should be the true 'Icons', but Wayne made sure he was always the hero in the many 'War Films' he made.
John Wayne applied to the Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1925 but was first alternate. By WWII he had health problems, including injuries from performing his own stunts. His 3-A deferment was what every man with children received - married or not, he had dependent children. He tried to enter the Marines in 1943 as a commissioned officer but the billets were frozen. He then requested to join the OSS (forerunner of the CIA) under the Army Field Photographic Unit. His request was approved but the letter went to his wife's address and she never told him about it. By 1944 more manpower was needed and he was reclassified as 1-A, but he was contracted to Republic Studio who requested he be reclassified as 2-A even though he again wrote letters asking to join the service. It is thought that John Ford blocked his request. He did a Pacific USO tour in 1944 and did some OSS work for which they issued a plaque but he refused to accept it. Hero? No, but there is proof he tried. (see JWayne.com)
Supposedly Joseph Stalin was also a big fan of his movies, although there is a legend that Stalin also tried to have him killed for his strong anti-communist views. Is it true? Hard to say.
John Wayne is one of those people who everyone tries to paint their own worldview onto, making up facts as they see fit.
just go down the list of things a country might want to symbolize with their flag: unity, love, peace, brotherhood, war, hegemony, state-controlled media, nepotism, etc.
I have Irish ancestry and know that the middle white stripe on the Irish flag is for peace between Catholics (represented by green on the left) and Protestants (represented by orange on the right), so I guessed "peace" based on that because the white stripe on the Indian flag is also in the middle.
2. I thought of Bluetooth; why didn't I just enter it!

Is it common knowledge to know what the colors in a flag stand for? Or was it just a lot of lucky guesses for "peace"?
It's black now
