I hope this quiz isn't too much doom and gloom. There are some reasons to be hopeful. Particularly the growth of solar power.

As an engineer working with architects regularly, we are seeing more and more solar power specified. We are also seeing an increase in geothermal. As these systems become less expensive and more widely available, not to mention all of the green building initiatives already in place, you will start to see more and more energy efficient buildings. The goal is by 2030 to have buildings with 100% efficiency.

Aren't there significant environmental and ethical concerns with the production of solar power though? I support solar but I'm skeptical it's going to really solve any problems.

Hypothetically, if we could place solar panels at every house plus some large scale solar farms, we could fulfill the energy needs for everyone on Earth. Although there are some concerns with the mining and production of solar panels, once in place, it would be extremely effective in curbing pollution and global warming. Of course the idea that we could get electricity to every house is improbable; however, if governments and large corporations would put in some significant investments, it is most certainly possible.

Environmental and ethical concerns? More significant than fossil fuel? Come on, you're buying into the fossil fuel industry propaganda. There's no aspect of switching to solar (or other renewable energies) that's not positive, especially when compared to fossil fuels. Even the "it's not enough" argument is increasingly becoming untrue.

I just realized that the most important issue of this century is vary rarely mentioned in featured quizzes. I've recently been taking the general knowledge series and there are lots of Nobel questions, Marylin Monroe questions, but nothing on climate change/breakdown. I've played too many quizzes here for its absense to be a coincidence.

"Disaster" implies an accident and Hiroshima and Nagasaki clearly weren't one.

Yellowstone seems kinda like an odd answer to have? I know tourism is harming national parks, but that isn't explicitly stated in the clue.

It might refer more to the caldera under there, that's threatening us with a climatic catastrophe in case of eruption.

conservation of nature/biodiversity is an environmental issue, isn't it?

Yeah, I take back my earlier comment, I think it's a valid thing to put on this quiz. It's also a nice reminder of some of the progress we've made in addressing these issues.

Any chance 'gas' could be accepted for 'natural gas'?
+18
Level 68

I also tried gas at first before figuring out that the 'natural' needs to be added. I'm not sure if it's different in English but in German you can definitely just say "Gas".

I think it's because in the USA 'gas' means gasoline, so Americans might enter it thinking of oil.

we just say gas too in Australia, eg, gas stove, not a natural gas stove and we are either hooked up to gas or electricity.

I agree, algo natural gas is mostly methane, so it should work too.

Also in favor for gas. When gas didn't work I tried methane as a last resort. Stared at the screen for 1.5 minute before giving up. My mind went blank after that.

The percentage is quite telling too.

CH4 for methane? That one's fairly commonly known so accepting it as a type-in would make sense
