It's only been taken 74 times. Give it time. Once it becomes featured on the front page, that will go way down. The only people taking it are the ones seeking it...ergo nerds like me :-)
yup, average still 35. I agree there are quite a lot of cheaters on the site, you see people admit to it regularly so there must be more.
But for this one there is not much need. It is not like the map quizzes where you get it wrong it turns red and you dont get another chance. I got all but 5 in one go and could get the others by educated guesses and trial and error. "ow it isnt this one? then it must be that one"
Plus you seem to forget you are on jetpunk. Not that european capitals are some obscure knowledge (Like chinese cites with more than 1m inhabtitants or something) It is basic elementary school stuff. (though most adults would ve forgotten half of it, the ones you never hear about after elementary school tend to slip further away (or didnt excist yet when you were taught the capitals like former yugoslavian countries))
I easily got 100% first time through no cheating required. And 38 seems about right. Take off the bottom 7 least-guessed answers and look at what's left. Most people have at least heard of those answers and could guess them if nothing else. Personally I find it harder to believe that 15% of people missed San Marino and the Vatican.
They are pretty easy for people who love capitals and stuff! That is why I got all of them at 13 years with lots of time remaining! There are people in my class who know so much about football and rugby etc., which I know nothing about!
At 13 it is even easier, you would ve learned them only a few years ago, instead of some distant memory of 30+ years for some ;)
But good for you liking geography :) In my personal opinion more valuable than football ( though you wont have a tonne of use for this in life either ;) ) Unless it is about being able to join certain conversations or something.
Some don't need to guess; they just 'know' the countries the capitals are of, ahem. (A preposition is a bad word to end a sentence with. That's why I added 'ahem' to make 'of' the penultimate word of that sentence, instead of the last.)
Mogysht: you'd get all of them by studying the wrong answers and trying again, and again until you know them by heart. If you actually wanted to learn them, you wouldn't cheat.
anavil1234: I find this amazing! Great job!! My schools never taught most countries or their capitals. Isn't that sad? I'm 18 and teaching myself. The USA education system is absolutely horrendous.
Personally, I only got 35 on my first pass through, but I knew which countries I hadn't guessed yet--primarily the Balkans/FYRs and Baltic states--so I went back through, trying the countries I hadn't entered yet, until I got them all.
yea, the bit above greece was a bit foggy for me too. Specifically tirana and ljubljana. And skipped zagreb and skopje and bratislava first. But got those in one go after I had done the other answers I knew.
Some I had difficulties with before (10 minutes ago on another quiz) I though of the following for. Bosnie and Serbia, start with S and B (switched). BudaPEST =plague (in my language)->hunger. BratiSLAVA. so a word related to slav in it. And two others that makes no sense, but helps me... kosovo=pristine and bulgary is smart=sophia. Ow and buchaRest with the R of romania
(And didnt know vaduz and valetta before either, but they just seem to stick. Maybe cause valetta and malta end the same, and well, then there is only one "weird" one left so...)
If you know all the countries in Europe, it's not hard to narrow it down to just the smaller countries, and then all you have to do is look at how the word sounds and think of the language area.
Well obviously they couldn't think of Liechtenstein. It's not as if there's a list of answers to choose from. Sometimes you run out of time before you think of which one you're missing.
39 on first try. Had to draw a map of western europe back in 7th grade and color and label it, have never forgotten that assignment. :) Almost 40 years ago, and it's seared into my memory. Ones I miss are former Yugoslavia, cause in my mind Belgrade is still the capital of Yugo.
I get all the 196 countries, and my best world capitals is 146 going to press, so it's not that fanciful that people like myself get %100 on this quiz is it?
remember people taking this quiz are quiz-goers not the average man on the street that is not into quizzes.
I got 41 on the first try because I took a quiz that was the opposite (country to capital) several weeks ago and memorized several then. Love these quizzes. They sharpen your mind and teach you something.
I don't know what exactly you mean by cheating. I keep on doing it till I get it right. I google to learn. Isn't that the purpose of this site? After a year or so, am struggling at level 40, so please leave us 'cheaters' be!! How the hell you guys get to such high levels bewilders me, but then it was the same when I was at level 1!!
to me, cheating is reading the comments first to look for clues, or looking up answers you don't know before you actually start the quiz...maybe you should have just 15 seconds before it starts automatically.
doing and redoing is NOT cheating, it's a learning process, especially when it's a long quiz.
cheating is looking up the answers during the quiz ( or right before when you know what the quiz is going to ask) If after doing a quiz, you wanted to brush up on the answers you missed and you study the answers whether it is here or on another site then it is not cheating. (works beter, if you really do it to learn, if you wait about 30 mins, to see if you really have retained the information and not just recite it from shortterm memory)
And cheatig serves no purpose to anyone, cause you hardly ever retain anything that way so you never learn, plus screw up the data for everyone else.
Plus if someone desperately wants to cheat, let them do it the 2nd time around, so the data isnt corrupted. Cause only the first attempt is measured.
I think another thing to consider is that the people taking this quiz probably already know quite a bit about European geography, so the scores are likely to be higher. If someone didn't know anything about the capitals of Europe or didn't care to know, they probably wouldn't take the quiz.
Many have done the 196 capitals of the world for a few years, so this is not hard unless, like me, you can't type. Finished all but last 2, but my heart is pounding. It's awful knowing them, and hunting and pecking with one finger...anytime screen will shade black....
Except the majority of people taking these quizzes have a strong interest in geography. A large proportion of them, including myself, are also European.
I don't know that it is because of cheating. I knew all of them the first time I took the quiz because I made a point of memorizing all the capitals years ago. Lots of people take a quiz multiple times as they study, so will get higher and higher scores. Lots of people also use quizzes like this to review, so will also get high scores. If they showed the scores only of people who have taken the quiz for the first time, the average would be lower.
But you don't need to. There's enough time to guess all countries left once you get the score to 40. So, 35 is pretty reasonable, another reason is also that people who take this are often into geography so the average is higher than what normal people do.(if it was for normal people, 15, I assume?)
Yeah, this is a self-selecting group here. I knew all European and US state capitals by the time I was 10yo. Lots of map-heads around here.
However (and I put this on the QuizMaster) there should be a way for whoever runs this website to analyze how quickly the text is entered, pauses between text through basic software analytics and figure out who cheated.
It's honestly not that hard. If you use the process of elimination and do the easy ones first, you can just type each country left on it, and 38 can be easily passed.
I wouldn't say so, I'm by no means good at capitals but I managed to get 43 on my first try (granted I did another similar quiz earlier), so not that surprising that the average score is 36.
But also self-select: I think 'only' people who know European capitals are going to see this quiz, and take it. (and a few others who are just interested in testing their current familiarity, or learning them).
I am not real smart, but have taken some EU capital quizes over the last few years for fun. I got 39/45- and if I had a word bank, I think I would've paired the remaining.
I missed: Kosovo, Montenegro, Albania, Serbia, Slovakia, Moldova. By that point I was forgetting which countries I hadn't guessed yet- (that's the only way I got Malta). I think I had
finally got 100%. I know countries pretty well, but capitals i'm pretty weak on. I'm actually surprised that Sarajevo was lower than Tallinn considering how often it was in the news in the 90s.
45/45 together with loads of other people. It is not that hard. Even if you only know 3/4 or just half for sure. You can guess the other ones. So I dont see a reason NOT to score 45 (unless you dont know the european countries, or are a very slow typer (or somewhat slow on mobile))
Well, I got 30/45, but I'm tired right now...and considering half of these countries didn't even exist when I was probably first learning geography in school, not too bad, actually.
That's not true. Only these don't exist (except if you are older than 70 right now) Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Czechia, Slovakia, Kosovo, Russia, Moldova, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania which is only 14 (pls tell me if I missed any bcos I didn't check i only used my own knowledge)
38 out of 45 seems about right. It wouldn't be the average if you surveyed a bunch of random people on the street about European capitals. Not even close. But a self-selected group of people who specifically came to a trivia site and sought out a geography quiz is hardly a random sample.
yup, other way around wouldnt have been this easy. Pretty sure I would ve definitely missed out on atleast 5, including spelling issues.
I just put my hand over all the capitals and see if I knew them by heart and these were the ones that didnt come instantly (Spelled correctly) (some did after a few seconds, but not sure that would be the case tomorrow)
I would miss, Albania, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Slovenia, and Moldova. plus I might forget about valetta in a few days, just learned that one today)
I dont think it ever was, but you arent the only one in thinking that. I have heard it many times by other people and it is a common misconception. It ís the most famous district, so I guess people might have just assumed it (since it has no official capital, otherwise you would ve heard about that one more, so there was a gap to be filled and people filled it with monte carlo) and other people just accepted it as truth from other people.
Oh c'mon! If RUSSIA can be in the 'European' countries even though most of the body of the country is in ASIA then so can Cyprus. At least Cyprus is in the EU.
Clicked "Random" on the Jetpunk front page and got this - having spent months doing the capitals of the world quiz, this was a breeze. Jetpunk clearly knows me too well!
Please consider adding Hague as alternative capital of the netherlands. And technically Switerland has no capital, so Bern with an asterix (*de facto capital) should probably be used.
Some years ago I randomly learned every european capital because my math teacher wanted to do a quiz with us about them because on of our students was pretty dumb. So I learned every one of them. Was it necessary? No. Did I impress my teacher because i took 5 of the most random countries someone would take? I think so. Did I forget some of them after the years? Yes. And I wanna refresh that knowledge and put every capital of the world into it. Gonna be a though one ngl.
If it had been "here's the country - guess the capital" I would not have gotten more than 3/4

i hate it when people cheat especially when they don't admit it
