Technically, Gibraltar is a British overseas territory and not a city according to the European Union.
+2
Level 96
Aug 20, 2013
Yes, Gibralter is an overseas territory, but the capital city of Gibralter is Gibralter. If you want to get picky, the Spanish town of Tarifa is closer to Africa, though it's just over half the size of Gibralter, so may not be counted a 'city.'

I'm aware that the term city is used loosely on this site, but where I like Quiberon and would love it to be on a quiz, Quimper is an actual city.

I know Porto but not Oporto....:\
+2
Level 66
Jan 13, 2017
"Porto is also known as Oporto as a result of linguistic mis-interpretation, as apparently when the Portuguese referred the city of Porto, they would precede it with an article “O”, and foreign traders therefore assumed the actual name of the city was Oporto."

This is what I found on the city name of Porto above. "Oporto" seems to be quite an odd one to include when there are so many other 'O' cities to choose from, the Portuguese don't refer to the city as Oporto and now foreign people don't either, it was only called Oporto due to peoples well meaning ignorance. It should not be in this quiz at all!

I know this is an off-point and a "little" dated inquiry, but when did the capital of Monaco become Monaco? In school I was taught

that the capitol city was Monte Carlo.

Curiously, you accepted Antwerp; Essen, Dresden, Cannes and Barcelona, but not Napoli?
+7
Level 34
Jun 17, 2017
Isn't Napoli the only one in that list that isn't also the English version of the place name?
+3
Level 58
Feb 6, 2019
Because those names you listed are the names of the cities in English. Napoli is not the name used in English (although I am surprised Napoli isn't accepted as an alternative).
+2
Level 72
Sep 8, 2019
Yea all the ones you choose are written like that in english, so I am not sure what your thoughtprocess was. Accidentally picked the opposite of what you meant?

Though besides antwerp, which is antwerpen in its own language the other ones are the same in their native language.

This is the third time I take this quiz and the third time that I miss Quimper because I read "Great Britain" instead of "Brittany". I grew up in Brittany.

This O for Oporto is quite misleading: portuguese don't call it so neither in portuguese nor in english, and abroad it is most often referred to as Porto anyway. I have been in the city and was pretty sure it was the correct answer, but with an O in the beginning i didn't even bother to try.

I'd like to offer some alternatives:

Czech City neighbouring Poland - Ostrava

Ukraine's "Pearl of the black sea" - Odessa

Largest city on Gulf of Bothnia - Oulu

+1

No because antwerp is flemish, so antwerpen could be correct, the name in dutch, which is their official language. But not anvers otherwise you should accept the arabic or polish word for it too
