Well, Well, Well..... It's pretty sad when more people get Conan than Dubois.

Never heard of him. I am not American. I don't even know what NAACP means and not ashamed of that. On the other hand Conan O'Brien is somewhat of a legend in our country. He even met our president of the time. Both being redheads.

Except it's actually not sad, considering we're living in a time where one of those people currently exists and is very famous. And you can see him on TV or on your smartphone every day. And he has a VERY distinctive name and face and hair. And he is very famous in multiple countries.

The other person, albeit very historically relevant and transormative, died before most Jetpunkers were even born.

The reality of life is: What would TRULY be sad is if a Western person using Jetpunk (a western website) was so cloistered and "strange" that they didn't know who Conan O'Brien was in 2012. When you don't even know basic things about modern life around you, in the real, current year you're living in... that's actually more concerning than not knowing historical facts that have already passed. That's probably a hard pill for a lot of pretentious Jetpunkers to swallow, though.

What's sad and not sad is highly subjective, and I also don't know if Conan qualifies as 'very famous' although he is certainly some level of famous. What you present as 'the reality of life' is once again your very subjective interpretation of what is TRULY sad. Seems perfectly reasonable to me that somebody who doesn't watch much TV or read the news probably wouldn't know who Conan is, much less know what he looks like. And maybe instead of watching TV or reading the news, say that person much preferred reading about American history or watching PBS documentaries or something like that and is well-acquainted with W.E.B. DuBois. How on earth is that sad? Heaven forbid in this hyperconnected age of constant gossip somebody takes an interest in something other than mass-marketed consumer pop culture. What a shame that would be. And amazingly, not everyone in that demographic is gonna lord it over your head because they think they're refined and you're just a sheep in the herd.

What's sad is that you feel the need to be so condescending. People can watch late-night TV *and* read books. Conan is very famous. This whole comment of yours is embarrassing to read, frankly.

Brickster and Pearl2270 are being far more condescending. Whether Conan is very famous or not, saying that it would be sad if someone didn't recognize a picture of Conan O'Brien is excessive. Not everyone has to be connected to the media, just as not everyone has to be connected to history.

I'm sorry, I'm the one being condescending? I don't see how what I said is more condescending than the comment I replied to. I presented a hypothetical situation in which it wouldn't be sad that somebody doesn't know who Conan is. Was I snarky and sarcastic? Yes. Was I condescending, snobbish, or patronizing? Not any more than the OP was, in my opinion. You seem to have gotten the point of what I was trying to say. I have no clue how my comment was more embarrassing for you to read than others or why you felt the need to let me know how you felt about it. To me, it seems far more condescending to tell internet strangers that you're embarrassed by their JetPunk comments, frankly, than to offer a different POV, albeit in a sardonic way. Thanks for your reasonable take on things, Dollyfroggy.

I know Conan's name but I didn't have a clue what he looks like, he's one of those American celebrities that has no real presence across the pond outside of us knowing he exists.

One of my housemates from long ago told the story about how his parents got a visit from the FBI, who wanted to inform them that their son had joined a Communist front group in high school. the W.E.B DuBois Club. He claimed he didn't know about its politics--he thought he was joining The Boys Club.

Added some, but this can never be a comprehensive list.

What's so bad about Chris Evans? I can't fault you for not caring about some random celebrity... But why hate on him in particular? He's easy on the eyes, has had some fun acting roles, and doesn't seem to be a terrible person. And I mean, that's America's ass!

Very good quiz - enough challenge for just about anyone since there are people from many different fields and from different time periods. I got 18/20 - I knew Rocky Marciano but I spent the last 45 seconds misspelling his name enough that it never picked up any of my variations (which included a "Z" and an "S"... ah well, my bad. Showing my age, I suppose, I still have absolutely NO clue as to who this "Bill Burr" is... W.E.B. Dubois, Emily Dickenson, Thoreau, Susan B. Anthony etc were no issue for me, but sometimes people popular right now may have never crossed my radar...
