after 2 hours retyping this list, I can say I have them thoroughly memorized. No logic to them, each much possess attributes on its own to attract settlers (or secure wanton reproduction?), or industries that provide jobs, or a climate that's great, or a spirit people love, none related to another. As a non-American, it was a surprise to not see cities like New Orleans, StLouis and Buffalo in a Top 50 of the biggest US cities.
+1

It looks like New Orleans just barely made it back on with the latest update. St Louis meanwhile is half the size it was 100 years ago and probably isn't going to recover.

The St. Louis County and metro area would have made it with nearly 3,000,000, but the City of St. Louis is a fairly small area with a little over 300,000 people.

Sometimes I'd like to take a quiz but don't want to wait till I come home and can use a computer. No need to scroll quite often. In this quiz you just type the biggest cities, they're not alphabetic so scrolling down will only tell you if you missed some obvious/biggest ones. And there's no need to type, you can swipe and autocorrect does the rest.

This shows just how dumb the technical definition of 'city' is in the USA, and how pointless the listing. Cleveland, Cincinnati and Tampa aren't even on the list, but their metro populations are WAY bigger than places like El Paso and Wichita, but just because their local government areas don't encompass the whole city they go down the list.
+5
Level 72
Jun 27, 2018
Or, more precisely, it shows how different types of incorporation and different types of technology influenced city borders. Boston is puny now, but it seemed a lot bigger in 1630 when you had to travel by foot, horse, or boat. They also didn't annex Cambridge/Somerville/Milton in the 19th century to become larger just like New York annexed Brooklyn/Staten Island/Bronx/Queens and Philly annexed...a whole lot of neighborhoods. LIkewise, southern and western cities incorporated later in areas without preexisting surrounding settlements and with road systems and cars that could increase the area of incorporation.

US city incorporation isn't stupid, it's pragmatic. (And weird.)

+1
Level 67
Jun 27, 2018
Yeah, I lived in Boston for five years, and I didn't learn until long after I left that Somerville, Brookline, and a few other places are entirely separate cities and villages (I did know about Cambridge). I thought they were all just different neighborhoods within Boston. All my friends lived in those neighborhoods, and it took ten minutes to get from each to the other and then to downtown.
+5
Level 44
Dec 6, 2018
Its appropriation of a word with a more general definition - city - and using it for something extremely technical. According to the American definition, London has a population of about 10,000, and El Paso is a bigger than Cleveland and Cincinnati. That's not pragmatic. Pragmatic means practical or useful.
+2
Level 72
May 26, 2019
What exactly is the "American" definition of city? Most states have different definitions of city. New York (where I live now) defines it pretty narrowly by governmental type, so the whole state has somewhere around 100 cities. North Dakota defines every incorporated place in the state as a city, so it has far more than New York.

There's no such thing as an American definition. Texas defines its cities differently than Ohio, and that definition is shaped by state governance laws, geography, and how easy it was to get around at the time that the place was incorporated. That's the very definition of pragmatic- the definitions are reasonable for the people who define it. If you don't like it, take the metro areas quiz. Especially since that concept is so incredibly well defined...

The official U.S. Census results for 2020 came out a couple weeks ago. All the hype about New York City and other places taking a quick population dive as of Census Day proved false. NYC had lost a couple hundred thousand people according to the estimates shown in the table here currently, while the official count is 550,000 people more. Many of the losses and gains came out way off.

Very interesting. It appears that they found a bunch of new housing units that they didn’t count before. But that only explains 250,000 of the difference. We will be sure to update next June when the 2021 estimates are released.

I was really surprised that St. Louis and New Orleans are not on the list. Perhaps in both cases the city proper is quite small if you don't count the surrounding towns.

Never heard of Long Beach, except as a brand of cigarettes. So I looked it up on Google maps, and it is a suburb of Los Angeles. Not a satellite suburb or a neighbouring town that has grown to merge, but bang in the middle of Los Angeles. To me a city is the entire urban sprawl. Clearly it means something else in the US. The term 'city proper' in the hints does not help. Do you mean local government areas?

"City proper" very likely means to refer to a city by its official municipal boundaries. This definition would separate Long Beach from Los Angeles they are technically two separate legal entities.

boston, nyc, philly, baltimore, and dc would all be one big city by your definition. Its one continuous urban sprawl along the east coast. but they are all independently governed as separate municipalities. hence long beach is separate from LA. if it was Metro population long beach would be included in LA. but that's not what the quiz is asking

It's very interesting to see how the use of city proper changes what appears on the list.

Cities have a much higher ranking than their national reputation would suggest:

1.) Jacksonville

2.) San Jose

3.) El Paso

4.) Mesa

5.) Fort Worth

Cities with a much lower ranking than their national reputation would suggest (this one relies more on metro area)

1.) Miami

2.) Atlanta

3.) Minneapolis

Cities that surprisingly don't make the list (likely would it used metro area definition)

1.) Saint Louis

2.) New Orleans

3.) Cleveland

4.) Cincinnati

5.) Pittsburgh

6.) Salt Lake

Great quiz though I would like to say that metropolitan areas is a far better way to show population. Still great though. For example Atlanta is 10x that size when considering it surrounding areas

Interesting how massive of distinction there is between cities and metro areas now a days. For instance Columbus is a top 15 city here, and the only city in Ohio on the list, but as of 2022 is actually below Cincinnati and barely above Cleveland in metro area rankings (oddly enough Cincy is below Cleveland in city proper rankings). Urban flight is certainly at play, but so are some peculiar politics. Being from Cleveland, I will use Ohio as an example again when I say Columbus has taken the liberty of incorporating a massive area of 200+ square miles, where Cincy and Cleveland are both under 80. Columbus is growing at a wild rate, but you'd be far fetched to find any Ohioan who thinks Columbus is bigger than these other cities to the degree that these stats insinuate.
