"Don" is not really a word for a Spanish lord, at least in Spanish. It is an honorific, more or less equivalent to "Mister", though it can only be used with first names (e.g. Don Juan or Don Juan Tenorio, but not Don Tenorio). You don't use it just for lords, you use it for anybody in a formal context.
