I don't watch football, and I only got it right because I recognized it as either Catalan or Romanian and guessed major cities that spoke those languages.
Would have sailed easily to 100% but you had to throw in a sports one... had no idea where Camp Nou is but got it after a few minutes of randomly guessing famous sports cities.
So how would you define culture? I think any reasonable definition includes sports. More people (and time) are occupied by it than literature, art, and other things that are generally considered part of culture.
Some define culture in a way that it only includes things like fine art, music, and literature. Others, mostly anthropologists, define culture so broadly that it includes literally everything that human beings do. If you're defining it the first way, then sports are generally not included as they are considered "low culture" or "pop culture" by most of these types.
I tend to prefer the definition favored by anthropologists myself. But if I was going to be a snob and disallow some human endeavors from being labeled as "culture," personal prejudice would lead me to excluding sports right after reality television.
If you tend to prefer the definition favo(u)red by anthropologists, then you are accepting the inclusion of major world sports. Otherwise, you would be a snob, as you put it, and you are not, as you assert by including the sentence "But if I was (sic) to be a snob...etc".
My only complaint is that Malmo/Copenhagen has more water separating them than Detroit/Windsor. But I sure did learn a lot by pulling up maps and locating all the places named in the ones that I missed.
There has yet to be a Queen Anne II, so no need to distinguish between two. (Also applies to Stephen, John and Victoria, for those of you who do pub quizzes.)
I can't believe how many answers I got just by guessing random American cities... anyway, PNG to Indonesia is a tad iffy, because PNG is basically entirely on its island while Indonesia is mostly off it, while DR and Haiti are both almost entirely on their single island... a better analogy might be Ireland to UK, (island of Ireland), East Timor to Indonesia, or even Turkey and Cyprus (debatable)... or, if just changing it to half half island sharing, perhaps Cyprus & North Cyprus (once again debatable) or something. Also, for Yangtze, is it meant to be longest? I would say the Yellow River has had more impact on China, and various stats it could be based off (length within? population in basin? area in basin? arbitrary significance to?) are debatable
Why is Ireland to UK different? PNG is mostly on New Guinea, Indonesia mostly off it. The Republic of Ireland is mostly on Ireland, the UK mostly off it. And how is East Timor-Indonesia any different? Or are you saying the relative proportion of the island each possesses? Because the Indonesian provinces of Papua and West Papua are together roughly the same size as Papua New Guinea. East and West Timor are likewise roughly the same size. By contrast the Dominican Republic is quite a bit larger than Haiti and the Republic of Ireland is much larger than Northern Ireland. But yeah, I'm not really sure what you're getting at but I think the question is fine.
It seemed obvious to me, and it seems that 75% of quiz takers agree. I don't see how any of your examples fit any better than the existing question. Also- there are only two American cities. Perhaps there was an update?
Gosh you are right @beekash, I didn't realise this: not only should Punjabi be accepted as an answer, actually it is the right answer, the best answer to the question. Hindi has the most native speakers in India, Punjabi the most in Pakistan.
St. Paul is the twin city to Minneapolis, as they are both major cities in the same urban area, just how Dallas and Fort Worth both make up the Metroplex.
Anyone with an atlas or globe or basic geographical knowledge will know exactly what they are, especially those who live in countries that the tropics pass through i.e. Australia, Brazil, Mexico etc etc
I tend to prefer the definition favored by anthropologists myself. But if I was going to be a snob and disallow some human endeavors from being labeled as "culture," personal prejudice would lead me to excluding sports right after reality television.
(or maybe about Virginia)
