I might have gotten the golden ratio because around here there are some who try to use it to prove that the kabaa is the "center" of the world. Their logic is ludicrously flawed... but I have heard it repeated more than once.
It also shows up in Fibonacci numbers (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34), the proportions of the Parthenon, the number of seeds in the whorls of sunflowers, and other natural and man-made creations.
Why? Mean is the average of a sample, given by the total of values divided by the number of values. Ratio is if you were to have 1 of something, it would be worth a certain value of something else. i.e. 1:1.618.
I kept trying 'Crock of Gold' after 'The Crock of Gold' which is a novel written by James Stephens and published in 1912. I only ever heard this expression.
