I'm quite surprised by soccer. It's very popular in junior high and school playgrounds, but at the high school level I thought it was nonexistent. Sports like lacrosse and field hockey, swimming, even golf, seem to exist at a lot of high schools before soccer.
Yeah, that one surprised me, but like you say it's split up. Whereas there are boys' basketball and girls' basketball, the batting sport itself changes a little bit. Good thing. The old stereotype about girls not being able to throw loses some steam when most males make their first attempt at throwing a softball underhand. Or their 100th. I gave up trying. It resembled the dangerous but ubiquitous and fun version of lawn darts. Up, up and lands who knows where.
Soccer, track & field, basketball, and lacrosse were the big sports at the high school I went to.
However, my region of the country may also be an outlier because football is on the decline. Our football team was disbanded after my freshman year for lack of players, and as far as I know was never reinstated.
Huh. I was not familiar with that term. I guess it makes sense if you think of it in terms of a single movie winning (or not winning) all five.
My Dad grew up in the Quad Cities, which Wikipedia defines as "a region of five cities," so I'm fully ready to admit that not being able to count is a proud American tradition :)
It's not a counting thing - it's just that screenplays are divided into adapted or original, and a movie can only be nominated for one or the other. So the Big Five includes whichever screenplay category you're in and not the other one.
Does Taiwan still fit here. I am reading that the US signed a consular agreement in 2019, and the Taiwan travel act in 2018. Is that not official relations?
I confirmed this before making this quiz. The answer is no. The U.S. has no official relations with Taiwan, and officially considers Taiwan and the PRC to be one country, wink wink nudge nudge.
Didn't go quite uppity enough with Best Picture. "Movie" to the proletariat, "film" to the upper middle class, "picture" to the wealthy/privileged. I guessed film. Don't watch award shows.
I just think they're insular and aren't all that keen to be on the global stage. They (the powers that be anyway) are very protective of their culture, way of life and are quite leery of any Westernization. It's supposed to be a super interesting place to visit if you can manage jumping through all their hoops to get there.
Basically, the Bhutanese see no need for official relations since whatever the US needs to do can be managed from New Delhi while whatever Bhutan needs to do can be managed from the UN in NYC.
Great quiz, thank you. It should be noted that it needs just a little bit of updating. As of 2021, we have no official diplomatic relations with Afghanistan.
I surprised myself, getting 50/50 in 7:10. The number one high school sport had me stumped, and the five countries with no official relations was tough. But I did it. Thanks for the quiz!
I thought baseball would've made it, but it's split into baseball and softball, isn't it? I feel with the two combined it may have made the list.
You can see the full list of most popular high school sports here.
