I grew up watching Lawrence Welk with my parents. I hated it at the time, but now that I'm older, it's more of an interesting look at what used to be considered "entertainment".
I understood the inclusion of most of the bands on the list, but Smash Mouth seemed a non sequitur. Have I just missed the vitriol for them? I would've expected to see Cold Play, Adam Levine and the other 4 guys, or even Green Day before them.
I don't understand why it was cool to hate Smash Mouth. They were one of the very few bands with multiple top 40 hits in the late '90s/early 2000's that I actually liked.
I liked them when I was 7 and so did my old grade school friends. It's now a running joke and a source of embarrassment among us. They were featured in Shrek, so I probably shouldn't hate them too much. After all, Shrek is...
Really?!! Smash Mouth has been the butt of jokes for my friends for years! Whenever we hate something we always just say "that's smash mouth"....They're kind of like Chumbawumba..which I was surprised wasn't on this list
Ha. As a Michigander who has never been to the UK nor ever paid any attention to British pop music, I can easily say that Chumbawamba is my favorite Burnley based musical act.
Except Chumbawamba aren't really "pop", that one "hit" they had, yeah, I'm sure that wasn't intentional. They have a lot of material that probably wouldn't be played on general stations. Too political.
I myself do not feel strongly about Coldplay, but I strongly support the lyrical new-hole-tearing that was penned by Packerswin14. That was just good writing, friend.
I've taken this quiz twice and both times I ended up regretting it at the end because the second I read the last clue that horrible HORRIBLE song is stuck in my head again. God. Damn it.
Kanye West, isn't that the dude whose only claim of fame was a couple of months ago when he did something together with Sir Paul and his fans kept tweeting about how nice it was of Kanye to boost the fame of this unknown Sir Paul?
According to wikipedia, West has "sold more than 21 million albums and 66 million digital downloads.[2] He has won a total of 21 Grammy Awards, making him one of the most awarded artists of all-time and the most Grammy-awarded artist of his age.[3] Time named West one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2005 and 2011. He has also been included in a number of Forbes annual lists.[4] Three of his albums rank on Rolling Stone's 2012 "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list; two of his albums feature at #8 and #1 in Pitchfork Media's The 100 Best Albums of 2010-2014.[5]"
Despite all this, he's still hated. And there are still ignorant people like yourself who think he's only known for one song.
If Kanye is only known for one thing, it's probably for when he crashed Taylor Swift's Grammy acceptance speech to basically give everyone there the finger and make himself look like an idiot.
He isn't known for one thing, there is a long list of both musical and non-musical reasons. That'd be on there - maybe top ten, definitely not number 1. I'm not a Kanye fan by the way, just don't like ignorance or sensationalist comments.
"Wasn't very good" is an ENORMOUS understatement. It's like saying New Orleans got a "bit of rain" when Katrina made landfall. They're both absolute disasters. Yoko Ono deserves every bit of her horrid reputation not only as an artist but also as a human being.
As a Beatles tragic, I must concur with mikeb here. While Yoko's presence in the recording studio did lead to resentment amongst the group, the main culprit in the break up of Liverpool's finest was criminal businessman Allen Klein.
Having said that, Yoko has certainly been blamed, often solely, for this premature ending for decades.
I'm not sure Milli Vanilli were hated. People recognised they were exploited, and damn those songs are still catchy. Also, were "Walking On The Sun" and their cover of "I'm a Believer" not hits for Smash Mouth in the US?
If you wanted to add another similar but older group to this list you could put on The Monkees. My dad likes to tell the story about how disappointed he felt when it came out that they didn't play their own instruments and how he went home and smashed all his records.
Great list, but what about the Black Eyed Peas? Britney Spears? Miley Cyrus? Katy Perry? maybe Green Day or Dave Matthew's Band. ... it's alright, as long as you got Nickelback and Kanye West I'll forgive any other omissions.
Getting Lawrence Welk makes me feel very old. For When a Man Loves a Woman I was surprised to learn that Percy Sledge was hated, then realized his name wasn't accepted.
Kanye West is an egotistical a**hole, and often makes people cringe (especially those from Chicago), but he is actually extremely talented, and undoubtedly a great creator of music
Taking this quiz a second time, I realised that the Ice Ice Baby lyrics are wrong. It should be:
"To the extreme, I rock a mic like vandal, Light up the stage and wax a chump like a candle."
However, I am not enough of a fan to force the issue, and in fact quite like the idea of Vanilla Ice's lyrics having so little meaning that it doesn't matter which way round you put them.
I remember back in the late 70's, Debbie Boone's "You Light Up My Life" was played so nauseatingly often that one DJ proudly declared that was the final time he was playing it...then leaned back on air and smashed the LP on a table. It was hilarious.
The nonsense about U2 is ridiculous. People got a free album and they hate them for it...F U! Don't listen to it. How many bands that are HUGE give their new albums away. People are stupid. Also they, U2 are great. While I agree that their more recent stuff isn't as classic as Boy, War, etc. they are still very good and great live. As to Bono personally, people are just jealous. He is an excellent human being, not pretentious at all.
It's a shame people only remember Kanye West for his downfall. If people were willing to look past it, they would see that his first 6 albums were actually beautiful and transcendent. I know there is a bias against hip hop in general on this site, but those albums are considered classics. If we hated celebrities for their bad moments, there wouldn't be many people left to celebrate.
he can't rap, can't rhyme, can't sing, can't sample, pretty pisspoor lyricist... I'll never understand why people think Kanye is talented. What does he do well?
Maybe I just don't know enough to understand why U2 would be on here (assuming it's meant to be unironic because some of these are more joked about than hated), I heard about the Apple music thing and from what I hear their music isn't that good these days. But it's to my understanding they still have one of the largest fan bases; someone like Kanye is different in the sense where he is very "popular" and has a large fan base but is very very controversial as a person
Again, I don't really know U2 that well to be honest I just know a couple songs I've heard on the radio every now and then

She has also sung.
Very, very badly.
