Vermont was an independent state? If not for the fact that I knew the answer had to start with V, I don't think I would have gotten that one.

The original thirteen were all independent countries until ratification, which of course includes Virginia.

They were still under the article of Confederation until the ratification of the new Constitution so they were not each independent states.

they weren't independent under the articles of confederation, but they were in the brief window after the declaration of independence and before the articles came into force between 1776 and 1781.

If you really want to split hairs, Virginia isn't a state. It's a commonwealth.

Yeah, it's a cool but little known fact. They gained independence around the time of the American Revolution but joined the US pretty soon after the end of the war. I remember learning this from my APUSH teacher who asked a trivia question about the 4 states that were once independent (the others being California, Texas, and Hawaii).

Clarification: I just took another JetPunk quiz and (according to Quizmaster) it turns out California wasn't really an independent country. I guess my teacher was wrong on that one.

There was an independent militia group in Vermont for a short period of time. They called themselves the Green Mountain Boys, which is now what the National Guard in Vermont is nicknamed.

Is Vinland also known as Vindalanda or did I make that up? Tried every spelling I could think of for that! Also is there any chance of accepting Vietkong instead of Cong?

You probably confuse it with the roman settlement of Vindolanda, near the Hadrian wall.

Wow Vandals..... I tried Visigoths, Visi Goths, Visagoths, Visogoths, Visugoths. Turns out that was a different sack of Rome (year 410).

This quiz goes by last names (and it's the right way to do it, as opposed to all the "Musical acts by letter" quizzes that go by first names, for some reason - which always messes with my head).

Whereas going by surnames confuses me to the point that I’ve learnt to just skip the people questions. Any non-mononymic person whose name I’ve stored is stored by first name-(other names)-surname, never by surname first.

I first tried Viet Minh, then VC, and finally got the right answer. The Viet Minh did join with the VC in South Vietnam, so even though Viet Cong is the obvious answer, please think about accepting those others, too?
