I knew the general from the Battle of New Orleans song -- so much fun. For some reason, I thought Mardi Gras but didn't type it because I thought it was a week, not a day.
^ Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is, in reality, only one day. But I understand that, in Louisiana at least, the entire three day celebration is now called "Mardi Gras". In most other countries it's called Carnival/Carnavale.
To be fair, although Mardi Gras is technically only one day, the parades and celebratrions go on for weeks (first one is on epiphany but the big ones start weeks later).
Agree with the above as it's technically a day. However--as a native New Orleanian--it's considered a season here. It starts Jan 6 and ends on Mardi Gras day, wherever that day falls (between Feb 3 and March 9). So it can be upwards of two months of celebration. It's generally the last two weeks leading up to Mardi Gras day that things really get ramped up, though.
My home state, too (at least my birth state). Although I didn't try it for an answer I was curious to see if it would have accepted what many (most?) natives call the Superdome. All my relatives just call it 'Dome'.
