Actually, all these countries have embassies on continents, so none are really island countries
+17
Level 96

This is a common misconception. Although embassies and consulates are commonly referred to as "home soil," and considered the property of the represented country, the Vienna Convention does not state that the property is territory of the embassy's country. Just as a private citizen can own land that is still part of their country, an embassy or consulate is owned by a foreign nation, but with the added stipulation that the governing law on that property is that of the foreign state.

Excellent quiz but there is one technical error given the rules set out by yourself: the UK is not a country entirely located on an island/s, since the British overseas possession of Gibraltar is part of the U.K. And Gibraltar has a land border with Spain. So the UK by that definition is not technically all on an island.

You mention the rules, but did you even read them?

"Includes countries that have small overseas territories on continents"

+3
Level 41

Yes, Gibraltar is British, but its status is only as a British Overseas Territory, which is not the integral part of the UK. They are not the same. The UK is still located entirely on islands.

Brunei is located on the island of Borneo. The fact that Malaysia has territory on both Borneo and the mainland is irrelevant to whether or not Brunei is located entirely on an island.
+5
Level 68
Aug 3, 2022
What even is your thought process behind this? Baffling.
+4
Level 26
Oct 28, 2022
Brunei is not “part of Malaysia”. It is a country, not a territory. Some islands can share a border with a territorial region of a country that has its main region on the mainland. Just because this can happen does not mean it is not an island. It is technically surrounded by water, even if it has a border. Because that is also surrounded by water.

Level 35

the what the what what?????? bro, Malaysia has both islands and some land on the mainland, making it not completely an island country. Brunei is on the island Borneo, making it a island country as its land is only on islands.

Bahrain is connected to the land of Saudi Arabia by a bridge but is still and island so thats why only 40% of people got it I think
+1
Level 26
Oct 28, 2022
Bahrain is only connected to Saudi Arabia from a bridge because it makes it easier for people to get to Bahrain and back. Therefore it is not geographically connected to Saudi Arabia.

UK has Gibiltair, so it isn't an insular country, Australia what does it has to do with islands?
+1
Level 54
Jul 27, 2023
But despite having several overseas territories, the country UK itself is located on an island (well technically 2: "Great Britain" for England, Scotland, and Wales and "Ireland" for Northern Ireland). Its land mass is not connected to continental Europe thus it deserves to be on this list.

Australia, despite being acknowledged as a continent, can also be considered an island as well (a very huge singular island, at that) thus why it's also mentioned here.

Denmark? Greenland, Zealand etc?
+2
Level 54
Jul 27, 2023
It says on the description: "...lies entirely on an island" so Denmark is out of the question since its mainland is still attached to continental Europe. The same goes to other countries e.g. Malaysia, USA, Canada, Norway, Sweden, etc which, despite possessing/inhabiting separate islands and/or overseas territories, the mainland are still attached to a continent.

New Zealand is on the list. It's on #7 after the Philippines and before UK.
