7-11 is Japanese? wow. That explains why you see them all over east Asia. Always thought that was an American chain. but I guess they first started showing up in the States in the 80s which is when Japan started investing heavily in the American economy and everyone was talking about a Japanese take over, up until the major slow down of the Japanese economy in the 90s.
Also wasn't aware that Bridgestone, Sharp, or Olympus were Japanese, but those don't feel as revelatory as finding out about 7-11.
oh okay. So they really were emblematic of Japanese take over of the US economy. I thought I remembered something like that... from 20 years ago... somehow the connection still lingered in my brain.
Just got back from Dallas and thought I remembered the headquarters being there. This was by far the most surprising answer of the quiz...never in a million years would I have guessed 7-11. Learn something new everyday!
Through a series of deals with GM, Subaru, and Honda, Isuzu isn't really in the car business anymore. All they sell now are commercial vehicles and other big trucks - many of which are not even available in the USA.
The US is still one of the two most important markets in the world for selling anything, and for decades was by far the #1 most important. It's relevant.
Woah, had no idea about Bridgestone. For some reason I thought they were British. Still got them, though (but that's because I was running out of ideas on the tyres).
Lexus and Infiniti are "luxury" brands owned by Toyota and Nissan respectively. I agree though that JAL is a more prominent airline. Also, Ricoh, Konica/Minolta and Pentax are very common camera brands
I tried JAL, Japan Airlines, Japanese Airlines, Japan Air, etc, etc...then gave up. JAL is the biggest airline in Japan and is their flag carrier airline. According to Wikipedia it also has higher sales than All Nippon Airways.
Lawson is also American. lol 7-Eleven, Lawson, and Circle-K all started in the US. Family Mart is the one that Japan created, and I really wish that were on this quiz.
I was in Japan about a year ago, and I was surprised that Orion, one of the most common domestic beers I saw, wasn't on the list. The whiskey question also surprised me as just about the only whiskey I saw anywhere in japan was Hakushu.
Also wasn't aware that Bridgestone, Sharp, or Olympus were Japanese, but those don't feel as revelatory as finding out about 7-11.
Sharp and Olympus I knew and missed Olympus... Bridgestone I was surprised too!
I missed some very obvious such as Toshiba, Mazda, Subaru, and Yamaha.
Not as of June 2018.
I'm surprised to not find Hitachi on this list.
