I wonder why, I saw that greece scored the lowest. I knew it immediately, while with some others I needed another guess, and germany totally threw me for a loop.
Edit: I looked it up and it is NOT czechia, it IS actually austria. Czechia is 704 km and austria 801km...
the CIA world Factbook says that the border with Austria is longer so I agree w u but jetpunk differs a lot with its border lengths so I think we should just go w QMs interpretation
Germany and Czech republic is the hardest for me i thought it was poland at first and then did Netherlands, Belgium, France Austria, Denmark, and then lastly Czech. Republic, but no Switzerland.
When Chad didn't work for Sudan, tried Ethiopia knowing full well that that border was significantly shortened with South Sudan's recent independence. DUH!!!!!! Took a good 30 seconds before I realized my complete ignorance. Face meet palm!
Great quiz, but I think the format makes it too easy. One can just guess every country that the given country borders. I did that for the ones that I didn't already know and got 100% with time to spare.
Some of us don't know every country's borders. I had trouble with several, but I had enough time left to start guessing and eventually got them all and still had a minute left. Maybe the time is a bit generous but I'm not complaining.
That was a bit surprising. Apparently the border with Panama is curvier and also goes out onto a small peninsula on the Pacific side, so it is longer than it looks.
I thought so too (being a Pakistani). But when i did a little research, I found out that Pak-Afghan border is 2430 km, whereas the (undisputed) border with India is 2912 km. If we include the Line of Control (disputed), then it adds up to 3323 km. So yeah, the border with India is longer.
100% it at the last second. Couldn't figure out what bordered Greece. I swear I tried half of the eastern European nations and I didn't even know Bulgaria touched Greece
the polish border is only 476km. But according to my data (2 sources now, will continue looking if I find something that might match wiith this quiz..) austria is 804km and czechia just 701km.. Btw the dutch border beats the polish one, with 575 km>
Tbh I thought the polish border was more significant aswell. I guess you get that feeling because poland is rather big.
the amount of sides is rather irrelevant... and the region it borders even more so...
That is like saying Switzerland only borders Baden-Württemberg but Luxembourg borders (the entire westside of) Rheinland Pfalz AND Saarland. That does not make the border luxembourg has with germany bigger than the border switzerland has, no matter how you make it sound. There is no logic in that..
All the sources I can find show that the austria border is bigger than the czech border. I could only find 1 reference showing the czech border being bigger and that is when I literaly searched for the 815 km mentioned in this quiz. Annddd.... the source it links gives the same number I keep coming across lower than austria.
Besides you make it sound like czechia beats austria by a huge amount, like twice as much. Even if the 815 km is correct (for which I still not have found evidence and the pile of evidence against it just keeps growing bigger.. so higly unlikely, but I havent personally been there with a measuring tape..) The austria border is 804km, so that is a difference of only 11km. And according to one You made it sound it was ridiculous even thínking austria could be larger.
The one source I found that states that czechia-germany is 815 km also states that austria germany is 815km... so something is amiss there..
That is true, the quiz needs to be corrected. The source listed within the Wikipedia article that is apparently the source for this says that the border is 704km, different to the Wikipedia article itself.
I like the way we can reinforce our mind's eye image of the globe by thinking more about the relationships between places- much like the series that asks about A-Z countries closest to one country...
Wow germany czechia was a big surprise, the last one I got. All the other I got at first or second try but I had allready typed 4 countries before I thought of czechia haha (basicly all besides belgium and luxembourg, and only tried denmark out of desparation)
@quizmaster what source did you use for the germany-czechia border? Because world factbook gives a different number, and most pages ultimately have used them as their source 804 for austria and 701 for czechia)
Wikipedia contradicts itself. If you go to the geography countries you get one number (a: 801 km and c:810km) but if you go to austria-germany and czechia-germany border pages, you get different numbers (a:815/816 (only one that doesnt link to world factbook) and c:815km)
All the numbers but one give world factbook as their (dated, 2012) source but world factbook itself say something different..
The geography of germany page DOES actually have the same numbers as worldfactbook. (Austria 804km and Czechia 701 km)
So austria is consistenly shown to be around 810km (801-816) while czechia differes from 701km to 815 km while All of the different pages give worldfactbook as their source where it is shown as 701km)
I was also very surprised. But I have just checked two different German sources and they both say that the borders to Austria and Czechia are basically the exact same length. As one of my sources is the national statistics office, I assume it to be correct (https://www.destatis.de/DE/Themen/Laender-Regionen/Tabellen/gemeinsame-grenzen-deutschlands.html). Both say 817 for both borders...?
100% first try, but Eritrea took me a while, because I read Ethiopia - since that is also the right answer I tried every country in that part of Africa, including Eritrea, but not Ethiopia...
100% first try, the germany one took me like over a minute. i have a weird habit of just typing "czech" instead of "czechia" or "czech republic" and i tried like poland, austria, switzerland, and a lot of other countries (some not even touching Germany lol) before I realized that I wrote czech and not czechia
The fact that Sweden's longest border is only 1,600 km long shows just how distorted and unrealistic the Mercator projection is. On a map, that border looks more like 5,000 km.
Edit: I looked it up and it is NOT czechia, it IS actually austria. Czechia is 704 km and austria 801km...
but brazil and bolivia is weird
69% got bolivia to brazil
mind blown

YES! nice quiz!
nice quiz!
