Ah, that was a pleasure, reminding my favourite book of all time. Can you please also add Fangorn for Treebeard? If I remember right, it's kind of his official name, while Treebeard is more a nickname (and of course, his real name is in the Ent language and not understandable for most other races).
Treebeard is his real name, and in Sindarin (the second language in Lord of the Rings), it is Fangorn. In my opinion, I don't believe this should be an acceptable answer because it is also the name of the forest, Fangorn Forest. Even though it is ONE of his names, I think only Treebeard should be accepted. Treebeard is also the name he is call in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
I love LOTR nerds...okay...so TECHNICALLY...Treebeard isn't his "real name" either. One's real name is their name in their native tongue. Recall that in the Old Entish language, names for things include their entire history. Since Ents are so old, Treebeard's name would be incredibly long. The paraphrased example from the book is this: a-lalla-lalla-rumba-kamanda-lindor-burúme, the word for hill (or rather a very minute part of a particular hill's name).
Thank goodness they didn't. Leaving Tom Bombadil out is the single greatest change the films made. It's even enough that I forgive them for leaving out the Scouring of the Shire.
You should make this quiz more of a challenge. It is too easy to get 100% in that amount of time, someone could look up the answers before time's up, so maybe shorten time? Hope this helps, wasn't trying to be a grumps! ;)
Apparently I was the grumpy one here.. though I still agree with the content, the tone might not have appropriate as a response to this comment, which was a much lighter brighter mood. Guess I was kinda done with cheaters and people wining about wanting shorter times. And didnt have much to do with the poster above :)
Balrogs were spirits of the maiar that were corrupted by Melkor to his service. The balrog Gandalf faces on the bridge of Khazad-dum is called Durin's Bane. Therefore, I don't think Balrog should be accepted as a correct answer. It should be Durin's Bane.
I don't think you can say that the Balrog in Moria is called "Durin's Bane" just because it is referred to as that. It's not the name just an epithet. Surely no one would suggest that the One Ring is called "Isildur's Bane" or that that is its name but it is referred to as that.
nice quiz. if anyone is looking for another quiz to challenge their LOTR inner nerd, check out this one: http://www.jetpunk.com/user-quizzes/102112/lotr-whos-your-daddy :)
I forget his name EVERY TIME. I don't know why that particular order of letters just doesn't stick with me, but I seriously always forget. Like as soon as I clicked on the quiz, I was like, darn it, not going to get 100% because I already know I can't remember that one elf guy's name...
For those moaning that Strider isnt accepted.... If you dont even know that his name is Aragorn you shouldnt be bothering with this quiz!! He's arguably the main character of the story
Sam continues to call him Strider in the movies, I can't remember the books though. But considering that Sam was designed to be one of the most relatable characters in the story I can see why people think the complaint is legitimate.
Frodo is the main character, but never mind. All of you LOTR book nerdies (yours affectionally), welcome to try my test (you most likely find it by clicking my username). :)
I know all about the Lord of the Rings, I love the books and the movies, and I may say that I aced this quiz. But, for some reason when faced with the all too obvious first question, my brain combined the question and the two people who were Ringbearers and squirted out something different.
I couldn't believe it when I found my fingers typing "Ringo".
I've read LotR and all of Tolkiens other middle earth related books and watched the movies at least 4 times each, but for some reason I can never remember Elrond's name for some reason...
I read the books years ago. When the movies came out, I couldn't get my head around the actor of Elrond. Completely different to how I imagined Elrond to be.
The only one I didn't know was Celeborn, as he played a pretty minor role in the story. I also didn't get Tom Bombadil, because I simply forgot about him. Also, to agree with the others, maybe make a second quiz or expand this one to include Eomer, Eowyn, Denethor, Theoden, and more important characters who are missing?
Yay a quizz I can get 100% on ! I had to look the original name for two of them (because french translation sometimes doesn't make sens ♪). And I don't know why I wanted to write Cereborn so bad.
Aaaand I tried to type Beorn for the last one again and again until I remembered that yes, Tom Bombadil lived in the woods. This quizz lacks a Beorn. Please add Beorn.
Other characters that could be included (perhaps in a sequel quiz): Theoden, Eomer, Eowyn, Denethor, Radagast, maybe Barliman Butterbur and the Witch-King of Angmar... depends how far down the rabbit-hole you want to go, I suppose.
Nerd alert. In the books, when we meet Saruman the White and he is revealed to have turned evil he actually renames himself Saruman of Many Colours and his clothes are multicoloured.
Celeborn was a fairly insignificant character compared to, say, Eowyn or Theoden. Rohan was not represented well in this quiz, was that intentional? Other than that, great fun :)
My sister's mind was blown when I told her that there was a bad guy even worse than Sauron lol.
God dammit, I need a girlfriend...
We ride for JetPunk.
And war!
I couldn't believe it when I found my fingers typing "Ringo".
A lot of people missed Bombadil simply because they didn't read the books.
