Democracy? The islands were stolen by the UK. The islands were Argentinian until the UK invaded the islands.
+71
Level 55
Mar 8, 2015
They were never Argentinian. The Argies landed on what was British territory since before Argentine existed, and when the British government learned about it, they threw the Argies out. Argentina's been whinging about it ever since because it's easier for the government to distract a brainwashed people with irridentism than to sort out a failed banana republic.
+35
Level 25
Mar 10, 2015
So even though they were uninhabited when the English arrived (before Argentina was a country), the population wanting to remain as is, and being mainly british descendents, it is Argentinian?

Why exactly?

You talk about brain washing but sound like you're straight out of a class with Kircher. Any time Argentina as political/financial issues, they go all angry about the Falklands.

Continental platform means nothing, imagine if it did now? UK and Ireland would be what, French?

Well, you could grey them out. But the quiz shouldn't be changed just because some people want the islands to be part of Argentina.
+8
Level 75
Mar 18, 2019
Absolutely right to include then in the quiz as this is a geographic quiz and they are geographically part of S. America. By the same logic, should you not include Trinidad and Tobago, since the major part of that country (Trinidad) is also part of S. America?
+3
Level 77
Dec 2, 2019
But over 3,000 people live there. JetPunk has (almost) no issue with showing the Crimea as part of Russia, so it should also reflect the fact that the Falklands are British.
+1
Level 44
Dec 5, 2019
Well, I don't think they should be taken out of the game due to them being geographically part of South America. But if we have the Falkland Islands in the quiz, we might as well add the Easter Islands and maybe the Galapagos Islands, which are part of Chile and Ecuador. I did see that the Galapagos Islands turned green when I got Ecuador, but if we add the Falkland Islands (completely unimportant if they belong to the United Kingdom or Argentina) I think we should at least add the other two larger island groups of South America as well. :)
+1
Level 44
Dec 5, 2019
And of course Trinidad and Tobago because it is also part of South America (I think). If it isn't, then at least the Easter Islands and the Galapagos Islands should be included. :)
+2
Level 77
Jul 11, 2020
@quiantaene12 You're saying the Falkland Islands are 'completely unimportant' (whatever that means) if they belong to the UK or Argentina? In that case the Galapagos Islands and Easter Island (which are much smaller territories) should also be completely unimportant? By the way the Falkland Islands has over 3,000 inhabitants and an abundance of oil.

So Argentina - mainly populated by the descendants of European immigrants - claim islands also populated by the descendants of European immigrants on the basis that said descendants should have no democratic right of self-determination.

Right.

Perhaps the Argentinians could show some good will by returning the land they stole from the natives back to them first...

Level 48
Jul 7, 2015
totally agree - The history of who got to the Falkland Islands/Malvinas is really confusing, the British were there, so were the Spanish and the French and the Dutch too. They all came, went and sometimes came back again - so purely on this basis you really can't say who should 'own them'. So how should you decide it - surely on the basis that the vast majority of people there want to remain British, not Argentinian. What would the point of giving them to Argentina be ? Who would it benefit - Argentina perhaps, but certainly not the people who actually live there
+3
Level 39
Sep 8, 2015
I'm not Argentinian or English (or British). On paper the islands were Argentinian about 150 years ago but there wasn't a single Argentinian living there. The settlers were British and still prefer to remain British.

Let the lawyers decide. If the courts rule for Argentina, the settlers could always declare independence and then join the Commonwealth.

Back to square one.

The way I see it is that both countries have some form of equal claim to the Islands. Instead of wincing about who it belongs to, let the people decide. There was a referndum and the inhabitants of the island decide. That land is British and some people have to deal with that, plz bear in mind I am neithier British or Argentine so i am quite unbiased in my opinion unlike some in this comments sections... and btw alex2108 you have started a war my friends...

It is obviously that people from Falkland will decide to be a British Overseas Territory instead of being part of Argentina. Time before the Falklands War, the British government sent British people to live there, most of them had their descendants there!
+3
Level 88
Jun 16, 2018
There is a misunderstanding. The people who live there have roots on the islands before Argentina was a country and they want to be British still. If you want to turn back the clock that far, then Argentina would not possess the Falklands because Argentina would be possessed by Spain ;)

+3
Level 83
Sep 2, 2020
so what about the 2%? If 98% of the residents of Charleston, West Virginia voted to secede from the United States and establish a country for White supremacists, would the US government have no interest in protecting the rights and property of the minority who voted against it? If 100% of the residents of my house vote to form their own country, can we? Right of self-determination is some serious baloney. People need to learn to get along and function in a larger society. And democracy cannot be simply mob rule there must be protections for minorities.

I get what you are saying about rights for minorities. On the other hand, you've said people shouldn't get a say in what country they belong to, no matter how many. If 98% of Scotland voted to leave the UK, should they not be allowed?

The question isn't 'why is T&T considered part of the Caribbean Islands?', it's 'why is T&T considered part of North America?'

T&T being part of North America at the same time as Cyprus being part of Asia is one of the most glaring inconsistencies on this site. There is no perfect solution of course, there's no way to make everyone happy, and inconsistencies are inevitable. So yeah, leave it as it is I s'pose.

Platitude is correct. There is no connection between Guyana and Guinea. Guiana, sometimes called "Guyana",is a region of Northern South America, containing two Venezuelan provinces, a Brazilian state, Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana, (the latter two taking their name from the Guiana region). In fact, during colonial times there was Spanish Guiana, (joined Venezuela), Portuguese Guiana, (joined Brazil), Dutch Guiana, (Suriname), British Guiana, (Guyana) and French Guiana. There is no connection to Guinea, although they have similar names.

In fairness, Tonin is right. The UK invaded the islands and took them from the Argentinians. They'd managed to hold onto them for about 10 weeks.

This is way better for learning the countries. I been doing the one where you list the name by hand and even using it after a week barely learned them.

I just did this puzzle several times in a row til got it down perfect. I always struggled with the top, cause for some reason had Venezuela and Ecuador backwards. Then spent most life not even knowing about Suriname or Guyana.
