I feel silly saying this because obviously you would make sure you were totally up to speed on all the industry lingo and acronyms before making such a comment, but EFL stands for English as a Foreign Langauge. ESL isn't really used anymore, in favor of EFL and ESOL and other more accurate acronyms.
It would sure be nice to if the words guessed were displayed alphabetically so that we could quickly find the ones already guessed if we want to see which ones we have already guessed (for sure) ... I realize that the Quiz-maker here wanted to list the words in order of most commonly used words in the English language .... But, couldn't these cardinal numberings be listed in parentheses after all the words? And that way the answers could all be filled into an alphabetical chart. Please consider this evolution! Thanks very much!
What is the reference source for this quiz? How do we know these are dfinitvely the 100 most common English words? American or British English? Always cite your source.
Why would "yes" be added? This isn't something that the quiz maker just whipped up randomly, this is based off the most commonly used words. If yes isn't on this quiz, it shouldn't be.
I recited one of the Shakespeare speeches I know by heart. Got me quite a lot actually. "Lest" and "thy", sadly, no longer appear too much in the lexicon, though.
I was about to click "give up", but then I realized that "give" and "up" were probably both answers. Also I got at least 10 answers from the quiz description.
I got 50... not awful.... but still - I use all of these words at least once a day! :0 I have no idea how I forgot so many of these... especially 'And'. :/
"Yes" is only used for agreement, but "no" is used for disagreement as well as to convey the lack of something, e.g. you would say you have no idea, but you wouldn't say that you have yes idea.
Probably because ‘no’ has more than one meaning: ‘no’ as in ‘negative’ as opposed to ‘yes’ affirmative, or, it can mean the absence of something, e.g. ‘I have no idea’, or, ‘there was no way,’ or ‘He had no money.”
Amazing quiz and a challenging time amount. Sometimes it's nice to have a quiz with a time amount that makes it really hard to ace the first or even the second time for most people.
I kept thinking of more and more words and yet I didn't get them all. How fun. Makes you realize just how many words we use every day that are not the nouns and verbs we usually focus on when it comes to vocabulary.
it depends on what they are using for the corpus. If it were taken from transcriptions of conversations in fraternities and pubs, yeah probably. If it's academic texts or magazine articles, probably not.
Be good to the people of time. And in that, have a good day. Do it not for me, but as I see you on with this. At his will, by he, they come from, say, she or we. An even one would get my out there. Her "what?" , their "so?" go up if just about him. When can who like which make? Take into your year some " no". Could them, other than two. Now then, look. Its only use: "think back over". Also, how our work want, well, first, any new way after us. Because these give most.
This whst it feels like hearing some people talk sometimes. But nod and say uhu uhu, but then think what are they actually saying? A lot of words but it is going nowhere.
On the flipside, sometimes it us the receiver (me) when I'm very ill, tired, or have a fever, it can sort of sound like that, only words and having lost direction. Eventhough in reality they are making perfect sense (and in those cases my own comprehensability drops aswell... I think I have often typed some vague stuff on here.., concentration is often out the window due to my health. Weirdly enough, I cán concentrate on the quizzes themselves))
lol, i love how people need to cheat on these kinds of things. I got 100% with no cheating. But I will admit that it tried "why" multiple time before I gave up. "Why" should be on this.
That is what brought me here aswell. And also need to get 10 more. But dont like to take it two times in a row. I would make it if I do it again right now. But for me personally that feels like cheating (not saying it is when others do it) I rather wait a couple of weeks before trying again. Though this is one of those quizzes where each time, you might miss a different 5 answers, so getting them all but never at the same time to get a perfect.
Fun fact! The second most used word is used half as much as the first, the third one third as much, etc. This is called Zipf’s law, and it applies to many things!
As a non-native speaker I got 60/100 and I almost feel like it is easier if English is not you mother tongue, because you will more likely think about the very common words that you would use.
Wow, I never noticed that there were than many common words in English, I was exactly average, beating 50.2% of people, and its crazy to think that you don't actually know that many of the words you probably use hundreds of times per day.
Why is this so much harder than it seems?? Wow, I am a native English speaker and could only conjure up 55 when put on the spot. I guess that shows how naturally and thoughtlessly your native language can come. When I actually had to think about individual words I blanked. I missed 50 words that I probably use effortlessly 10 times a day.
the box at the start says my best score is 65/100 but when i finish it says your high score is 75/100 in a separate box. what's going on? is it something to do with if i've taken it untimed? i'm aware it's not specific to this quiz but i don't know a space for any general Jetpunk comments
The one at the start is generated before you take the quiz (so shows the best score you’ve gotten previously); the one in the white box is discussing your current attempt, so could give a higher result.
Today was the 1st time I started on this quiz...100% with 2:06 left. Just make sentences out of the words, e.g. First, when will she be there. Would you make most of it even with them? Tricky part is when you catch your typing for words like 'it' which is first 'I' then 'it'....I'm refining my sentences and word order to get through the little words first
Which is the most common five letter word found in English Wikipedia articles. I had code running for days parsing the contents of English Wikipedia and got a ranking for 5 letter words. 'Which' was by far the most common word, which makes sense for an encyclopedia.
If you did the preposition song in school, reciting it would get about 50%
There is 'no' milk in the fridge
'No' dogs allowed
I am 'no' fool
etc.

Got the 75/100 I was after, there were 8 words I never tried in any of my attempts: with, make, know, just, into, well, new, use
Then why isn't a suppletive conjugation like "us" counted together with "we"?
because any of these give us the most they can do.
so say what up when we make our new well also first come look at it if you know.
For now if i have the most time which he and her use all year
or just like go over there than with me on my way
but how would she take him back some other day.
Or not only get yours into their one from his as its after two
by about then will see them in.
Not bad for a french
