In scientific terminology, a berry is a fruit produced from the ovary of a single flower in which the outer layer of the ovary wall develops into an edible fleshy portion (pericarp).

Strawberries and raspberries aren't berries! Bananas, tomatoes, melons and chili peppers are!

I did some googling for the berries I don't know much about, and it seems that there isn't much variation from the basic morphology of the blueberry and blackberry. Huckleberries look like black blueberries. Lingonberries look like red blueberries. Elderberries look like blue blueberries. And mulberries, boysenberries and marionberries all look like blackberries. Is there much difference in the taste in all of these?

Not saying it didn't exist or wasn't used before, and maybe even extremely common in other countries, but in my country (not uk or us) it seemed to be non existent, untill suddenly all sorts of "healthy" drinks showed up, short lived hype, though still available (bottled water with cranberry flavor and 7up tasting stuff but with cranberries etc)

People who jump in and say, "Strawberries aren't berries!" are silly. Thousands of years ago, people who ate berries made a connection between the similar attributes of small fruits that could be picked and eaten. They called them berries for centuries and centuries. Then, more recently, botanists gave an arbitrary "scientific" definition that differed from the definition that 99% of people had, which excluded the original bloody point of the word! Well no more! We must take our words back from the scientists and make them use their Latin terms so we can save our berries! Strawberries ARE berries! You want to say an eggplant and a banana are berries? Call them Bacas, the Latin word, and leave us plebeians our berries. Good day, "Dr." Scientist!

First off, I am not part of the strawberries aren't berries crowd.

However your argument doesn't hold much water. Because should we consider sealions actual lions? And say that seahorses are equines? Just because people saw similarities and used names to connect them does not change what something is.

PS enjoy your salad with seacucumber ;)

My joke about Marionberries making great smoothies when mixed with ice, OJ, and a half cup of crack cocaine got deleted like 6 years after I made it? :( Had a lot of likes on that one. Too political for the current gestapo moderation policies? Even though the mayor has been out of office for 22 years and dead for the last 6? Or am I confused and thinking of a different quiz?

why is the way of measuring the most popular berries the ones that are most mentioned in books? i would say 'most popular' implies ones that are most enjoyed or bought by people, so surely ranking them by weight produced, or amount spent on them, would make more sense?
