Surely, surely you remember the mixed language and full German versions that were played on a minimum of 3 stations simultaneously for 4 months straight.
Yeah, the whole "Trash Nickleback" thing has always been a strange phenomenon to me. I mean, they really aren't that bad. Generic, sure. Cliche, ok. But so are a lot of other popular bands that don't get near as much hate. I guess to each their own...
Barenaked Ladies, Hot Hot Heat, the Tragically Hip, Arcade Fire, Rush, Pkew Pkew Pkew, Sum 41...that's all I got. It's more a question of *knowing* Canadian bands in general though. I'm sure if I knew 15 more Canadian bands, I'd think all or most of them are better than Nickelback. Having said that, the hate they get is disproportionate. Their music is bad, but that's not a crime. There's a comedian named Shane Torres who does an incredible bit about Guy Fieri (with a brief mention of Nickelback) that is a really excellent examination of our penchant for hating successful benign people as a reflection of our own insecurities. People like ragging on Nickelback because they think it gives them credibility. But most people who really know music wouldn't bother trashing a harmless band. It's like someone who corrects your grammar. They're just overcompensating to cover their wounds.
I'm not overall very knowledgeable about music and I don't particularly care about having credibility on the subject. I just hate Nickelback because their songs suck and I dislike hearing them on the radio. I could be wrong, but I don't even feel like they are that successful anymore. I mean they got a lot of radio play once upon a time but lately? They're just the butt of jokes. Some truth to what you say but I don't think it's the whole story. And I personally don't think it has much at all to do with why I hate the band personally.
