"Carrow", although not a valid answer for this quiz, is an archaic word meaning "an itinerant gambler" - Irish in origin.

Norwich City play at Carrow Road, so I wondered if Carrow might be a word...

Carrow used to be the name of a medieval village just outside the city. This area is now known as Bracondale, and lies well within the city boundary.

Carrow isn't in the Scrabble dictionary, which this is based on. Even my computer is trying to tell me it's not a word. Archaic words and spellings are archaic for a reason

The official Hasbro Gaming Scrabble website has a dictionary on it. Oakleaf is not on it. Sorry to tell you this, but this isn't a situation of Americans exerting themselves. It's just a company's decision

I tried spelling "epee" (like the sword) as "epie", but when I checked afterwards, I found out that "Epie" is a language spoken in Nigeria. It should be accepted too, I think.
+1
Level 49
Nov 1, 2022
Eipe isn't in the Scrabble dictionary. Languages themselves aren't allowed, I think because they're proper nouns? Either way, a weird caveat is that english and french both have meanings beyond that as a language, so both are accepted, possibly along with a few other languages that I just don't know about

Oakleaf is not a word in the official Scrabble dictionary, and even if it was, it doesn't mean the leaf of an oak try. That is two words, typed out as "oak leaf". Saying that the leaf of an oak is "oakleaf" would be like saying "birchleaf" or "spruceleaf" are words

Can we not use this word in the quiz?

It's a slur against disabled people and is very offensive (in the UK at least). It's a harsher word than c*nt but less offensive than the n-word so feels like it's not great.

+2
Level 49
Nov 1, 2022
In the US it's most definitely not a slur and is just used to describe someone who is highly energetic. I could see how it could be used in a derogatory meaning, but this quiz is based on the Scrabble dictionary, and I highly doubt Hasbro would and could remove every word with any sort of offensive meaning. Even a word like "r*tard" is allowed in Scrabble since it has a meaning beyond that of being offensive
