Those blackmail/cheating claims are rampant. I remember everyone in Paris being angry at London re 2012. So many were claiming bribes because London shouldn't've been considered since they missed the cut off date for application.
Yep, Paris was very bitter about that. Maybe part of the reason that at the end of the London Olympics newspapers all around Europe had headlines congratulating and thanking London for a good show, and in France it was hardly mentioned. Only thing I remember seeing was a series of articles claiming that the UK cheated in the diving :) Classic French/British rivalry really. Wouldn't be surprised if the same happens in reverse come Paris 2024, especially after all mess around Brexit.
Everyone that comments on how they missed this one or that one, mustn't realise that you can read the comments while taking the quiz. So if people get stuck, they can just scroll down to the comments and that has helped me complete a quiz numerous times!
Although it’s cheating, as long as you’re learning, it’s not that bad especially if you came back and did better without reading the comments. I sometimes read the comments, and then the next time I do that quiz I can get the answer without having to look at the comments. And it’s just a quiz website, there are worse things to cheat on.
Yes, but I'm always suspicious that someone who cheats on little things will be more likely to cheat on bigger things. It may not be true, but why plant even a small seed in anyone's mind that you are less than honest? (Such as a potential employer, future spouse, etc.)
Kinda runs counter to the whole "Summer" thing, doesn't it? LOL
But the "sporting world: being limited to where it was geographically, back then, there weren't so many choices, so if you think about it that way, it's less surprising.
Unless, like me, you have an older brother who used to call you a twerp. I was happy to learn there was a city with my nickname in it which made it easy for me to remember.
I always mix up Melbourne and Montreal. Since I already had the first, I was thinking hard why it wasn't working for 1976. Just couldn't think of the "other" 'M'.
It takes a lot of money and infrastructure to meet the requirements. Very often it turns into a losing proposition and many cities tax their people for years after to pay for all the building and extra security. There will likely be one in Africa at some point but it may not turn out to be a good thing for the city that wins the bid.
Interesting that 5 out of 7 of the last 7 summer Olympics have been (or will be) hosted by cities that hosted Olympics previously. London, Paris, and L.A. by 2028 will have each hosted three times! Also interesting that in the same stretch of time we saw the first-ever Olympics in China, and the first-ever Olympics in South America. A lot of old; a bit of new.
With all the scandals about the preposterous costs of hosting nowadays (shout out to Sochi!), it's not really surprising that the Olympics tend to come back to places that already have the proper venues. Less costs, happier tax payers.
That is like the Euro, the name Tokyo 2020 is a brand, for the last 7 years, everything is working with Tokyo 2020 as a brand name. Changing the name would cost millions. The report already costs 2.8 billions, I don't think they were keen to spend more for that.
As a city, Buenos Aires is definitely worthy and kinda surprising as they could have conceivably beat Mexico City or Rio to it seeing as they have been or were as big or bigger for along time, but I think that *somewhere* in Africa and/or India should get it first.
kinda funny how the olympics has to be held by a single city when most similer sport events are usually held by a country with multiple cities hosting events.
I hadn't yet heard that Brisbane won the bid for 2032. I tried and tried and tried to guess 2032, but to no avail. I did think of Australia, but I didn't think of anything other than Sydney. I DO have all of these memorized, in order, but when I was trying to learn to memorize them, Antwerp was the one that stumped me for the longest, although I had learned it by the time I took this quiz.
It's past time for Africa to hold it. Certainly Cairo/Alexandria could pull it off, as could Johannesburg or Cape Town. Lagos and Kinshasa are certainly populous/big enough, but infrastructure might be another story.
It's also past time for India to hold it. Mumbay/Bombay and Delhi would be definite shoo-ins. To a lesser extent, a few of the cities in South India could be outside shots - Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad.
Maybe somewhere in Southeast Asia or Oceania. Surely Bangkok can pull it off...maybe Jakarta.
Disaster? I haven't watch the 2010 Commonwealth Games, but Wikipedia says that, despite low expectations, it ended up going pretty well. And even though India is still poor, it's developed a lot in the past decade. I'd say give it another decade or so, and India may get to the level where hosting Olympics is very much feasible. It looks like they might make a serious bid for 2036.
I think including the future olympics on this quiz are unnecessary. Like, who cares or even knows that Brisbane “will host” the Olympics a whole nine years from now? Not only have these games haven’t even happened yet, there’s no certainty these cities actually will host in the future. The host city can always change or the entire Olympics could get cancelled, which was what almost happened in 2020.
Basically, no one here is a time traveler from the future, nor expect anyone to know what happens in the “2032 Olympics” if that even happens.
According to the source I found (a book I bought my child, Curious Lists for Kids), the 13th and 14th Olympics both happened in 1956, one in Melbourne, as you have noted, and the other in Stockholm. I’m old as heck and actually remember that even without the book.
But the "sporting world: being limited to where it was geographically, back then, there weren't so many choices, so if you think about it that way, it's less surprising.
WAY past time for somewhere in Africa to get it.
Coincidence? I think not.

Toronto maybe sometime?
Crazy that NYC has never done it.
