nice random selection, not too well-known. Genghis Khan irks me though cause no one knows what he really looked like - youd have to have seen that exact image in an article or something. The Van Gogh one looks like whats-his-name from coldplay...

I thought the same, looks a bit like Chris Martin from Coldplay.

No one knows what Shakespeare looked like either, but there's a popular image of him. Same with old Genghis, I reckon. I've never seen that picture of him, but I got him first guess because he looks like Genghis Khan is popularly depicted as looking.

Yeah, I found Genghis one of the quickest to get - it's a pretty pervasive image of him. Dunno how accurate it is, but it did the trick for me - and almost two thirds of quiz-takers.

Pretty cool quiz. I have to say though, could you accept Chinggis Khan for Genghis Khan? My AP World History book referred to him only as that, so I'm thinking it's a viable alternate version.

because there are eight King Henrys.

I've heard it without number plenty of times. I guess with them being so far apart, there's no need to use the number in context

"So far apart"? The king just before Henry VIII was Henry VII, who himself came only 14 years after Henry VI, who succeeded Henry V, who succeeded Henry IV. Basically, between 1399 and 1547 there were about 24 years not ruled by a Henry, and most of that was just Edward IV.

@Djilas - we use the regnal number when we talk about particular kings and queens. Saying King Henry could mean any one of the eight that have been kings of England/Britain (unless context is patently clear).

True, there are two Queen Elizabeth's but the Queen Elizabeth in the picture is the first Queen Elizabeth. Just as if it was King Henry I in the picture, then King Henry would be accepted.

I guess I don't see a problem with how it is now. Everyone feels differently though.

Got 15 out of 20. It's a good random quiz. It took me a few guesses before i got elizabeth I, genghis kahn, douglas and dickens. Don't know who che guevara is though. I actually thought the picture of Van Gogh was that of some historically significant serial killer or some other kind of lunatic..Lol...oops.

I tried this with my students. The only one they could come up with a name for was Che Guevara- the power of being a t-shirt, I guess. They shouted out his name immediately. The others they either had no idea about or struggled with. They came up with "George 1st" for Washington, somebody guessed Queen Victoria for Elizabeth, they thought Van Gogh was a zombie, Hitchcock was Egyptian, someone recognized Earhart from Night at the Museum but did not know her name, and someone else thought that Lenin was Louis XIV. After the answer for Genghis Khan came up they knew who he was, too, but were not able to guess even with an ample number of clues.

I think there's a more common picture of Dickens that people have seen, (an engraving, I think, rather than a photograph) in which his hair is considerably wilder and free-flowing than the rather staid and trim state in this photograph. I think this is why some people have not recognised him. We've had him on banknotes in Britain.

One of the very best Funny or Die Drunk History sketches ever was Jen Kirkman doing how Frederick Douglass met Abraham Lincoln, in which Don Cheadle's main character point was to have his hair styled exactly like the original - a thickly forested Afro, combed downwards into a parting.

Not so odd since Gaddafi has been in the news much more recently than Dickens and there are most likely a lot more pictures of him.
