When (and where) I memorized it, there was still Ku (Kurchatovium, Kurtschatowium, kourtchatovium etc.) in it. Aren't you glad they found an easier-to-spell name for that one (Rf).

And there may be many others but they haven't been discarvard!

For my score I would like to thank Tom Lehrer!

I do feel that anyone who knows the song should only be allowed one minute. I manage my best score of 101 without knowing the song at all.

1. The first few elements - hydrogen;helium. lithium etc go first

2 complete the noble gases and the halogens

3. Planets(4 including mercury)

4. The ancient known metals - gold silver iron etc, and add platinum

5. Geographical ones

6. All the elements associated with Ytterby

7. Famous scientists

8. All the heavy elements - tungsten - iridium etc - and iridium gives you chromium

9. start the new silly ones - livermorium; seaborgium; tennessine etc

Then start going through all possible two letter combinations.

And when there are only 20 or so gaps start to panic.

115, a personal best. In all the times I've taken it the only element I've never guessed is Roentgenium. Strange because it's a fairly distinctive name AND it's atomic number 111, so I'm surprised at myself. Maybe having typed up this comment I'll remember next time.

There ought to be three sets of answers. One for everyone who learns the song or otherwise does it 'by rote', another for 'real' chemists who I suppose 'ought' to know the answers; and one for all the rest of us who think back to our days in the lab at school, and who can just about remember the meanings within the periodoc table - so we know there should be five noble gases - have we got all of them. We know there ought to be five halogens - have we got them all?

The problems come with rare earths and the trans-uranics. Then we just remember Sweden ....

I shouldn't have taken this quizz.

I hoped that we needed the symbols of the elements, but... Nope. And I know most names in French (my mother language) it takes forever to translate (when I know the translation)

Fe - Fer - Iron

Cu - Cuivre - Copper

Cl - Chlore - ???

That will make some poor results. :-/

Many French people will now remember well bismuth! :D

(for those who don't know, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, currently tried for corruption and other crimes, was using "Paul Bismuth" as a pseudonym in the affairs he's prosecuted for)
