There are actually only 4 Star Wars films. It's strange that The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith are on this list since they are a trilogy of Adam Sandler comedy movies.
Ohh Darthcaedus66 pedantry how jolly original AND funny. Rolls his eyes.
For the record, I don't think Rogue One is anything special, but it is head and shoulders above those three abominations that are commonly known as the prequels.
I hear this a lot but that was actually the moment when i became Star Wars fan. Ofcouse I've seen 4,5 and 6 but when I was 14 years old The Phantom Menace was awesome!
At the time I left the comment I regarded 9 as being marginally better than 8 only because 9 didn't exist. At this point, the film is finished, but I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know. But my expectations are low. 8 is still abominable. And 7 is overrated.
Jack: I'm going to skip it. Such a horrible shame. What a wasted opportunity. I thought that it was impossible for them to squander the potential of the follow-up trilogy more than the prequel trilogy had done... but... they pulled it off.
What frustrates me the most is that they had the potential to be great. The actors do a good job with what they’re given, the effects are good for the most part, the music’s good as always, and some of the characters are actually interesting. There are some really good moments in this trilogy. But the story sucks. A lot of character decisions don’t make sense. There’s some SJW moments that don’t need to be there. I could go on. And it saddens me that just five years ago, the Internet was super hyped for this and now they stopped caring. Because they know that Disney is better than this. Lucasfilm is better than this. This whole trilogy just turned out to be a huge disappointment and it killed the love of Star Wars for many fans more than the prequels ever did.
Yeah, exactly, such wasted potential. If they had just sat down with some genuinely talented story guys and made a decent plan for the sequel trilogy, one that placed plot, character development, and a little fan service over politics, and then hired talented directors who agreed with the overall vision and were willing to work together to pull this off (and who actually liked Star Wars maybe?), this would have been so easy.
The reviews I've looked at for Ep 9 make it sound incredibly stupid, maybe only marginally better than Ep 8. I'm going to pass on ever seeing it I think. I'll still enjoy the original trilogy from time to time and I finally got around to giving the Mandalorian a 2nd chance and it was actually okay.
My last surviving hope for Star Wars would be that... say 10 or 15 years from now, someone has the vision to say "you know what? Those prequels and sequels all could have been great but really sucked, let's redo the whole thing"
Then they announce they're going to reboot the Star Wars extended universe, scrap all of the movies except for the original trilogy, go back and remake the prequel trilogy with no Jar Jar, no incredibly bad romantic sequences on Naboo, no racial stereotypes or cheesy looking overused CGI, no pod racing, no hammy overacting, no midichlorians... tell the story of the Old Republic, of Anakin becoming the most talented pilot in the galaxy, of his falling out with Obi Wan, and then of him hunting down and killing all the Jedi and becoming Vader.
Then move on to do the sequel trilogy, drawing from the old canon people loved and Lucas' original plan, with no inexplicably powerful First Order, no even more ridiculous Last Order, no OP Mary Sues, no SJW politics, no wink wink nudge nudge fan-fiction style jokes, no derivative lazy plots, and a story that makes sense and is consistent through all 3 films.
It's just sad that the original cast will be too old to be in it if it happens.
I had the same hope for Transformers actually, start over from scratch, do a period reboot set in the 80s that was actually true to the spirit of the original Transformers and not some masturbatory Bay explosion fest. But the closest we got to that was the first 10 minutes of Bumblebee so far, and I don't think they will ever disown the entirety of Bayformers because the films made too much money and Hollywood producers are idiots who only think in dollars and even then not very clearly.
Whilst The Last Jedi is probably a perfectly watchable film if you are only vague aware of SW, anyone who knows much about it can see the utter contempt the Director and Studio showed for the entire history and back story of the franchise. There is so much wrong the film it’s hard to know where to start. After I watched it I was gobsmacked at how much had been changed for no real reason and for very little discernible benefit. All that so we could have a very crap Sci Fi version of ‘Speed in space’.
I haven’t seen the last film, nor have I watched the Solo film, I think I’ll just leave Star Wars as it’s just become something I don’t recognise and it just disappoints me how badly it has been done over.
No, the prequels are only masterpieces among those who make memes. They have plenty of problems that would prevent them from being legitimately great achievements of cinema.
Some people (me) could care less about all the hype surrounding the sequels after 1980 (yeah, stupid Star Wars 3: Teddy Grahams In Space movie I'm looking at you). Others don't care whatsoever for make believe foolishness. I couldn't tell you squat about Hobbits, Harry Potter and comic book movies. It makes my brain rot to see or hear 10 seconds of any of that bombastic crap.
This is all fine, but they're so ubiquitous that one could be expected to know the names even if you have no interest in them. I just got off a plane at JFK three hours ago, and the walkway from the terminal was one giant advertisement for the Rise of Skywalker. The commercials, ads, articles, are everywhere, all the time. The first six are on TV constantly. I've only seen two of the Marvel movies, but I can name probably 20 of them just because they were all so heavily advertised and people talk about them so much. I can probably name all the Twilight movies too, even though I have not seen nor do I ever intend to see even one second of that franchise. It really has nothing to do with how much you like them.
Agree, it was just Star Wars when it came out in '77 but apparently they added the New Hope business in 1981. Maybe after The Empire Strikes Back came out Lucas realized he had a franchise and needed to distinguish the first movie from the rest.
We all know that Episode 9 is next (clearly to be titled "The Force Goes Back to Sleep"). But judging by the release pattern of the previous entries, I'm not sure what to expect after that - Episodes -2, -1, and 0?
I am thinking that because it is just a star wars story and not an actual episode it does not count. I think the quiz should be renamed Star Wars Episodes because Rogue One is one of the best movies in the franchise.
What others have said. The "Star Wars" saga includes only Episodes 1-8 at present and is centered around the story of the Skywalkers... Anakin's rise, fall, and redemption... and the story of his son Luke. Though.... now that episode 8 killed off Luke and Carrie Fisher had the good sense to write herself out of the script for the next one... is episode 9 going to be a real Star Wars film? Episode 9: the Continuing Adventures of Chewbacca? Episode 9: Threepio and Artoo's High School Reunion? I guess... Kylo Ren aka Ben Solo is Leia's son so there are still Skywalkers in the story in a sense.
Rogue One took place in the Star Wars universe but Darth Vader was just a background character in it. It's not part of the main saga. It's not Star Wars: Rogue One. It's Rogue One (a Star Wars story).
As long as money can be made from the franchise, they will continue to make the movies. They will milk the franchise until the cult surrounding it is all dried up. I wouldn't be surprised to see "the adventures of R2-D2" in the future
I guess it's just a testament to how good the original trilogy was that I keep going to see these movies. The prequels sucked. The Force Awakens sucked. Rogue One was good for 60 seconds right at the end. The Last Jedi sucked worse than The Force Awakens. I stopped going to see Transformers movies after the first one but we're 6 films deep into crappy Star Wars movies and I'm guessing I'll probably go see the next one, too. But... starting to have 2nd thoughts at this point.
Yeah, I honestly feel like Episode IX is a dentist appointment. I feel this weird obligation to go, even thought I hated Episode VII and half-hated Episode VIII (I actually think what they did with Kylo Ren is great and I am so happy that killed off that useless Emperor 2.0). I don't expect to enjoy it, but I know I just have to go and get it over with. Or maybe I won't. No matter how you brush, you're doing it wrong.
The Force Awakens was awesome and so was The Last Jedi, but to each their own I guess. The older I get, the less impressed I am with the originals. The prequels were the most anticipated cinematic let downs in history, even worse than Al Capone's vault.
The only saving grace for the Phantom Menace was Darth Maul and he only got like 6 minutes of screen time.
I think it was shortly after commenting here that I changed my mind. I'm done with Star Wars. The Last Jedi was THAT bad. It has completely, totally, irrevocably killed my love for Star Wars and I have no interest in seeing more. None. To me Star Wars, at least new Star Wars, now occupies the same space in my brain as Michael Bay Transformers or the Fast and the Furious. If I see one is out I'll think "hey, that steaming pile of crap is probably going to make a lot of money. I wonder when something decent will be playing." Except that TLJ was so bad that it turned off mainstream audiences and the new one didn't make anywhere near Transformers or Furious money. I went to the theater the day Solo was released and was surprised to see it; I honestly had no idea that it was coming out on that day. Compare this to my enthusiasm for Episode I where I was waiting in line for days just to get good seats. Anyway I skipped it and went to see Infinity War for the 3rd time instead.
I watched season 1 of Mandalorian and it was alright. But I feel like without being in love with the Star Wars universe, the show doesn't have much to offer. And... I'm not anymore. :-/ haven't had a strong desire to watch season 2 at all.
They were far more revolutionary for the time than anything in the new movies and they hold up well enough. The original Star Wars is often given credit for *inventing* modern special FX driven pictures, if not King Kong. More importantly, the characters, the stories, the direction, the scripts and (some of) the acting were 1000x superior. The Force Awakens is never going to be on AFI's top 100 movies of all time list. And the only chance The Last Jedi had for winning any accolades was lost when this year's Razzies nominations came out and both Rian and his film got snubbed.
Actually I take back what I said about new Star Wars not having any shot at receiving accolades. Given that they recently nominated Black Panther for Best Picture, purely for political reasons, if Star Wars continues on its current trajectory Episode 10 could get nominated, too. Who knows.
For me the original movies were witty and had humor sprinkled in. They were fresh and nothing like we'd ever seen before. The newer ones are nothing but special effects and action which gets boring with nothing to break it up. All the characters seem so serious - very little humor or personal chemistry as with the original characters.
Episode IX: Disney brings back the hack director of Episode VII to try and salvage something from the roaring dumpster fire that the even-bigger-hack director of Episode VIII has turned the franchise into - a.k.a. remember that beloved character we just completely betrayed and then killed off in an incredibly stupid way in the last picture? well... maybe he's back. Because... cohesive scripts? Continuity? Who needs it! Give us a billion dollars please?
Those are all spin-off movies from the original series. Solo, Rogue One, and the Battle for Endor aren't part of the original series. That's why they aren't on here.
for me, i like the original 6 films. the sequels and Solo were pretty pointless and were just a cash grab for disney. lthough, i could live with Rogue one
but you know what is not good? THE FORCE UNLEASHED ISNT CANON ANYMORE!

8: The Last Jedi
9: From His Nap
A pox on you, George Lucas, for vandalizing your own masterpiece!

World Wars Episode II: Attack of the Germans
World Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Soviets
Episode IV: The Rise of the Red Terror
Episode V: Return of the Chinese
