My god, 184, this was hard to type all these names. And they have to spelt correctly i found. I messed up many times just from 1 letter mixed with the other lol.
I got 183 out of 196 and still didn't get a 5. Are you kidding me? This must be one of the hardest quizzes on Jetpunk and most people probably aren't getting more than 70 or so. What do I have to do to get a 5? Get all of them right?
Can you add Colombo as an acceptable answer for Sri Lanka's capital? Sri J... is a district of Colombo and I cannot manage to spell the official capital correctly
i feel like accepting shortened versions, while it can be helpful, shouldn't be done. I understand it's making spelling easier, and I agree that acronyms like DRC or CAR are good, but if it's just a shortened part of the word you could keep typing without noticing. This happened to me as I was typing Ouagadougou and it just accepted 'Ouaga.' Kinda ruins the flow.
Some of these are annoying because the answer is accepted but there's still more to type, which leaves the correct letters in the next answer. A couple of the shortenings I don't like because I'm drilling myself to keep my knowledge current and I actually want to know the full name of the capitals of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Sri Lanka and Brunei.
But not everyone uses the quiz this way, and lots of people are frustrated with knowing roughly "Ouagadougou" but not how to spell it.
What I'd love is a feature where I can choose (for a given quiz, a given take, or maybe for my user) whether to accept loose spellings and (especially) shortenings or whether to keep it strict. The accepting of close misspellings doesn't bother me, but the truncation does.
Howcome Colombo isn't accepted along with Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte when Bloemfontein, Cape Town & Pretoria all are? It's the same situation in Sri Lanka as it is in South Africa:
Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is its legislative capital, and Colombo is its largest city and financial centre.That's Sri Lankas constitution, even though Kotte is in Colombos urban area, those are two different cities still. Their constitution defines Kotte as the capital.
South Africa have officialy divided their 3 branches of power in three different cities that aren't even near onw another. Two totally different situations.
Because you've taken this quiz more than once. If you get Paris right the first time, but miss it the second time, it will show your percentage for Paris at 50.
I was really confused why Bujumbura didn't work for Burundi and Dar es Salaam didn't work for Tanzania. Okay maybe I should've known about Tanzania, apparently it was moved to Dodoma quite a while ago...
Sorry, you've got the capital of Indonesia wrong. It's Nusantara, on Borneo, not Jakarta. (As of today, that is. See CNN article, "Jakarta isn't the capital of Indonesia anymore.")
This has been in the works for several years. And although Nusantara hasn't been built yet, and will be built in phases, it seems to be implied that once the legislature made this ruling this week, it became the de jure capital of the country, even though nothing official happens there yet. (A bit like the Bujumbura / Gitega thing in Burundi, although the (small) Gitega did already exist.)
Techically that would be cheating due to mexico and guatemala having city after there country as their capital.But andorra having la vella after their country’s name.
What is a pain in the ass when you are typing without looking is when you type the correct spelling for:
Vientiane
Tallinn
...for example, and the final letter (for whatever reason) is not required and ruins your next answer because there's a dangling final letter at the start of your lovely new capital.
I suppose for those guys who have completed it multiple times and are going for time improvements, this fact can be borne in mind (Jackinthebox above, for example) but for me, it is painful.
Also I don't recall typing the name of the capital of St Vincent because the capital of Jamaica is acceptable because it's close enough. BUT NO ! It isn't.
(Sorry - I see my frustration is aired by partdavid above)
OK, just wanted to let the creator of this quiz know, that it's a great quiz, it needs no change, and I've taken this quiz about a million times and I've loved it every time. Great Job! I now know the capital, location, and name of every country in the world because of you!
I've done this quiz several more times since I wrote this comment. My high score is 100% in 6:52 and in the Countries of the World quiz my high score is 100% in 6:43. I know that nobody cares, I'm just really proud of my self and really thankful to the creator of this quiz and the Countries of the World quiz.
Would it be at all possible to either change the posted answer for Ukraine to Kyiv? I know it's a small thing, but like, anything to decentralize Russia as the source of transliteration/translation of other countries and such. Just a thought! Otherwise, love this quiz!
I think that because most sources (Wikipedia, BBC, Britannica etc) have switched to Kyiv, and given the situation right now that you should change from Kiev to Kyiv.
I agree Tel Aviv is the capital of Israel, and this is generally international consensus, Quizmaster has his own set of (somewhat controversial) beliefs. Hard to argue Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine however - most people would probably agree on Ramallah.
It annoys me that the Quizmaster pushes his own political opinions in the quiz rather than adhering to international consensus, which, given that only the US and Israel consider Jerusalem the Israeli capital, is very much that Tel Aviv holds that status.
It took me many tries to get all the capital cities down and I still spend 10 mins a day practicing. There are so many difficult spellings to remember and I've had to get creative with some. For example Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte = Sir Jay, a warden at Epura Kotte prison. Silly, but it worked for me. Now that I know all the cities, I practice them in various orders, including alphabetical A-Z and Z-A. I found if I just did the quiz top to bottom, I was memorizing what words were next on the list rather than learning which countries the cities belonged to. I did the same with the 196 countries of the world and the 118 elements of the periodic table. Fun and good for the brain!
i just got all 196. i’ve done this quiz 3 times over the course of the past 4 months. i was stuck on dushanbe for a good 3 minutes and i thought i wasn’t going to complete it. i’m so proud of myself
Aced all 196 somehow, on Burundi I thought, *Why isn’t Bujumbura the capital? It should have been.* Then I realized I had like 4.5 minutes left and thought *IT’S GITEGA!* I like this quiz
I accidentally clicked give up instead of unlimited time, nooooooooo, I couldn't do it in time but didn't want to fail ones I knew, I would have gotten so much higher
Allow Welington (without l) and Ryadh (maybe more).... non-native English speakers could have problems with that...lots of countries and cities are written really differently in another languages (in mine we haven't got double L`s and is more simple)
I had mastered them all except africa and been able to do them just fine, including the map version tests for each area. I came here after doing Africa right for first time and wanted to see which ones I haven't mastered.
Albania and Parguay in west. Palikir and Majuro in Oceania. And randomly Bishkek and Beirut for Middle East/Stan. They're all the random ones I've had issues with before.
6 in Asia, Kualu, Dhaka, Phonom, Dili, Vientiane and Thimphu. There same old ones I've had issues remembering on site.
12 in Africa isn't too bad, cause only done Africa once, and haven't even done the map version yet.
I skipped all the ones I dont know and checked in at end, and its the same old culprits, some reason Bhutan and Thimphu are just impossible for me to memorize.
Its why mistakes are awesome, cause when you make same mistakes over and over, you remember last time messed up and randomly remember things you messed up. I remember Thimphu in end cause remembered its the word I always forget.
Jerusalem is the official capital that Israel claims but it is not universally recognized by other countries (the US recognized it just a few years ago during the Trump administration). The de facto capital is Tel Aviv. For the most part quizzes on this site use the official capital that is claimed by the country (the only exception I know of is Benin which accepts both Porto-Novo and Cotonou). I personally think the de facto capitals should be accepted as type ins at the very least, but its obviously not my call to make.
I would add more letters to this name to give it more of a dramatic effect, but an average of 22% of users get this answer correct, so I can't lie. How, though?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t Mbabane and Lobamba both capitals of Eswatini? According to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lobamba , the legislative capital including parliament, as well as the royalty are housed in Lobamba.
could you please accept Delap-Uliga-Djarrit as the capital of the Marshall Islands as no matter where you ask, you will always find people saying that Delap-Uliga-Djarrit is the capital and other people saying that Majuro is the capital; even wikipedia contradicts itself: Majuro's page says that Majuro is the capital and Delap-Uliga-Djarrit's page says that Delap-Uliga-Djarrit is the capital.
This isn't meant to be a criticism (especially not of this quiz), but sometimes I'm baffled by the "alternate spelling" of words that are accepted, and the ones that are not. In general, I'm the type of person that would say, "just learn how to spell the word right". However, when some fairly simple words are accepted when misspelled, but it takes me ten attempts to get "Ljubljana" correct because there is no room for even the slightest error in spelling on one of the more difficult words (waiting for someone to tell me how crazy easy it is to spell) I just find it a little bit odd.
I feel like some more continuity here is needed. If Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte accepts "Sri Jayawardenapura", then Bandar Seri Begawan should accept "Bandar Seri", not just "Bandar". I also, and this might sound a little strange, think that considering how many "Saint" and "Port" cities there are, that if "Saint" can be abbreviated to "St.", then "Port" should maybe be abbreviated to "P" or "Pt."
Also, I feel like the Nauru/Yaren row should just be grayed out and filled in. In keeping with this same principle of continuity, if Nauru/Yaren were changed to this, maybe Switzerland/Bern should be too?
I finally got them all 196 capitals, and in less than ten minutes. This was after many, many attempts, and lots of consultations on teh wikipedia "capitals of continent..." pages.
Thank you for the quizz. This is a great way to learn and remember stuff. Cheers!
When I search for "World Capitals - Hard Version" I got no result.
ouaga => Ouagadougou
tallin => Talinn
vientian => Vientiane
bandar => Bandar Seri Begawan
sri jayawardenepura => Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte
sana => Sana'a
kingston => Kingstown

Shockingly I got everything in Africa except Juba.
I skipped all the ones I dont know and checked in at end, and its the same old culprits, some reason Bhutan and Thimphu are just impossible for me to memorize.
