How did 25% of people get Mauritius? I suspect foul play...
+19
Level 53
Jan 19, 2013
its probably because the description specifically says can include extinct animals, so people may've just assumed from that

Yep, total guess.
+3

That might have helped me had I not read it as "exotic" instead of extinct. Now I understand why it made no sense.

Most people think of the same thing when you read extinct animal

what lolrobbielol said. it said extinct, did dodo, didn't even know where they lived (some island i knew)...

Really? The dodo is pretty famous. It's the face of modern extinction. Plus, can you think of any other animals indiginous to Mauritius off the top of your head?
+6
Level 28
Aug 25, 2015
I didn't even notice that it said extinct animals count! I just guessed dodo because that's the island they lived on, and it's pretty much the only thing I know about Mauritius.

Level 75

Why? I have known that forever. I think the last dodos that lived on earth lived there, and it's on their coat of arms. 25% is actually pretty low, these quizzes are frequented by a lot of geography/trivia nerds, so I'm actually surprised how low that is

Educated guess on my part. It's the only animal I could think of that is uniquely associated with Mauritius. I too did a report on dodos (in elementary school IIRC). I didn't notice that Mauritius was in blue, thanks to my blue blocker, and I didn't catch the instruction about extinction, thanks to my haste.

Apparently dodo has gone extinct on this quiz now.

There's a great episode of Stuff the British Stole about the dodo, for all you dodo enthusiasts out there :)

Mauritius isn't on there anymore, but if it was, dodo would be my first guess.

The description of the unicorn on the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom is as follows:

a Unicorn Argent armed, crined and unguled Proper, gorged with a Coronet Or composed of Crosses patées and Fleurs-de-lis a Chain affixed thereto passing between the forelegs and reflexed over the back also Or.

on QI i learnt that englands national animal was actually a leopard despite what everyone says, the english had not seen a lion ever before at the point in history when it was first depicted on richard the lion heart, they did however know about leopards and in some form of document it was said to be a leopard, so... YOU WRONG
+15

Jan 21, 2013
Yeah, that's why the English football team is called the Three Leopards. :)
+2
Level 74
Jan 13, 2020
I've heard exactly the same, and also that that is why the lions on England logos have beards - leopard literally means bearded lion.

Makes me wonder what they think a lion's mane is though...

QI does tend to stretch the truth quite a lot

I embarrassed myself on this quiz. I am always learning just how much important stuff I just don't know. But thanks to this delightful quiz, I now know that the rooster is France's national animal, and that the lowly Carp is Japan's. BTW, I didn't even think of trying "BALD Eagle" for America, and I have no idea whatsoever why, when I came to South Africa, I entered "Springbok" without a hiccup. That said, I am still kicking myself for missing "Bull". Egad.
