Think about it this way. In the 9-year span from 1961 through 1969, there were 35 performances of 60+ points - 1 by Jerry West, 2 by Elgin Baylor, and 33 by Chamberlain. In the entire remaining history of the league, there have only been 29 more such performances by any other players. Talk about a truly dominant career!
It's really hard to compare because basketball players can stay on the floor an entire game and get the ball every time their team has the ball, which permits them to score 60 or 70 in a game. A hockey player is on the ice less than half the game, and forwards usually only play about 1/3 of the game. A baseball player only gets four at-bats. I think Michael Phelps and Wayne Gretzky were indeed more dominant than Chamberlain, but it's tough to make a true comparison across those sports.
Bradman was indeed head and shoulders above the rest in cricket, but there are at least two Australian sportspeople who were more dominant in their sport: Walter Lindrum in billiards (look his record up if you're unaware - it's incredible) and Heather McKay in squash. McKay, as world #1, had a winning streak in all tournaments that lasted 19 years from 1962 to her retirement in 1981. Unlikely to ever be beaten as a record in any individual sport.
if cricket was easier in Don's era. There would be tons of batter wil averages over 80. Tendulkar will always be second. Even second place is debatable.
He's #2 on my list of all time dominance. My favorite Gretzky stat is that you could take away all of his goals and he would still be the NHL all time leader in points.
Let me rephrase what I said: Devin Booker's 70 points was the LEAST IMPRESSIVE 70-point game in NBA history, for three reasons:
1. Avery Bradley, the Celtics' #1 defender (at the time), did not play. He would have been guarding Devin Booker.
2. The Celtics were winning by around 30 points throughout the entire game, so they did not concern themselves with how many points Devin Booker was scoring.
3. At the end of the game, the Suns repeatedly intentionally fouled the Celtics, just so they could get the ball back and add to Booker's point total.
Remember that I am a Celtics fan, and my "saltiness" is meant to be perceived with a layer of humor.
Guys. I have a new quiz "NBA All-Decade Team: Best NBA players of the 2010s" for all NBA fans out there. I have many unique quizzes in my profile you gotta try these hard quizzes. Thanks more power jetpunk!.
I was at that game. My buddies and I were having a weekend in Portland and decided on a whim to get tickets. It was really fun to see that, even though the Blazers lost.
Don't watch basketball but cannot help to be impressed with Chamberlain - 70 years of basketball (from the first 60+ game in 1949) and there have been 72 occasions were someone has scored at least 60. 32 of those occasions are from him! 11 occasions of a 70+ game and he has 6 of those (including a '100'). Wow. No-one has come close to replicating his dominance.
Good old Jumpin' Joe, one of the greatest shooters that nobody knows. He's infamously known for his jump shot ability, but nobody recognizes the points he would score on the board! 60 points in 1949 was a remarkable moment for National Basketball Association fans.

Only SIX test batsmen with a career batting average of over 60, Don Bradman's average was 99.94.
Next best is 64 (and Steve Smith is still an active player so this will probably come down).

Oh, and half those performances ended in losses.
