You're right. Shouldn't have gone to OT. Go back and watch Chris Gamble's catch that was ruled incomplete on 3rd down. If instant replay had existed, the game would have never gone to OT. OSU would have won in regulation. Miami fans love the cite the flag in OT yet they always fail to mention the refs missing the call on the Gamble play.
It's easy to recruit to the southern states with nice weather, beaches, etc... these recruiters know that "kids" want to have a good time and frankly, thats what most of these kids want. It also helps that the SEC has the best recruiters too. Most of the top 100 recruiters are in southern/coastal areas.... where recruiting is thriving.
It all ebs and flows though. Back in the day, the Big 8 was the beast of the nation with teams like Oklahoma and Nebraska owning everyone, it used to be even joked about that the Nebraska/Oklahoma game would decide things. It was only a little over 15 years ago that the Big 8 has 4 top ten teams at seasons end... with only 8 teams in the conference mind you. Every AQ conference has their time... this is the SECs time.
its because the south breeds the best players because they are all football crazy down there and every premier athlete from the south wants to play football over basketball, baseball and everything else
You're absolutely right. There aren't better and more athletes in the south, they're just much more concentrated in football. Whereas in the Midwest, West Coast and New England, there is much more diversity in the sports that kids play. That's why Big Ten and Pac12 schools can support 25-30 athletic teams (Ohio State has 37) while SEC schools only have 15-20.
What, we're not allowed to like the sports we like? Football is fun and exciting. Baseball is...ugh. Basketball is somewhere in the middle. It's just that we like football. Southern people don't complain about western teams (and Miami) dominating the NBA because 'they're all basketball crazy'. Grow up.
It also helps that the SEC allows schools to recruit more players than they have scholarships for....something not allowed by other conferences because it's unfair to the student athletes.
I'm proud of the way the boys played Monday night. We had it, then lost it, but thank you for a great season. I'll be an Auburn fan through thick and thin, til the day I die. Congrats to FSU, but WAR D*** EAGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Got them all, but was scratching my head over the fact that I had 25/27 with under a minute to go and there were still more than a dozen blank spaces. I was smacking myself after remember the last two - Notre Dame and Alabama. LOL
Why was Louisiana State not accepted? I even tried Louisiana State U. No idea why I didn't simply type LSU, but it seems to me that either should have been accepted.
Buckeyes also won a share of the title in 1970 and 1961 (NFF and FWAA respectively). I understand you're only showing AP/Coaches, so I'm not trying to correct you; just letting everyone know the Buckeyes have 8 National Titles.
Nebraska has 9 undefeated seasons and can lay claim to 11 national titles, but we only claim the five actual titles because we know better. Looking at you, 'Tide & Irish, with your 900 claimed titles from the National Enquirer and Cheerios boxes.
And Nebraska SHOULD have 6, except Irving Fryar accepted $10,000 to throw the 1984 Orange Bowl. Before Jeff Smith ran for the TD with less than 1:00 remaining to make it 31-30, watch Fryar deliberately drop a wide open TD pass. He pulls his left hand away to allow the ball to drop. Then notice his delayed reaction feigning disappointment in the back of the end zone. Also, on the game-deciding 2-point conversion, watch the Miami LB (#54?) over the center. When defending the option, the one thing you don't do is guess. You have reads that dictate how you react defensively. Yet that Miami LB "reacts" a split second before the ball is even snapped. The reason he did this is because Fryar had deliberately tipped off that the play was going to the right, which effectively cut the field in half for the Miami defense.
Very glad for a playoff system. I hope it expands. We finally have a real way of determining a champion. I think Penn State fans claim something like 45 championships.
Ha ha!! Well, I'm taking at least half of Nebraska's title away from them in 1994. And then there are those 1911 and 1912 teams who gave up 21 points. Total. In two seasons. (Buckeye fans still remember the 37-0 home drubbing they took in 1912.)
Explain how Michigan has the most wins in history out of the current FBS teams and Ohio State is SIXTH. If you only pick two teams, yes Alabama because they are number two, but they are closer to third (Notre Dame) than they are to first (Michigan). Go blue! (Info collected from All-Time NCAA College Football Wins quiz here on Jetpunk)
That's because the state up north had most of the 'championship' wins prior to 1950....and most of the them were back when there were like 4 college football teams haha! GO BUCKS!!!!
At the least, UCF deserves a co-listing, like the split poll years of 1990 and 1973. https://www.si.com/college-football/2018/01/11/ucf-national-champions-undefeated-season-banner-celebration
You have to give this quiz credit for wanting us to name the playoff winner during those years and not every national champion. Otherwise, UCF would have to be listed as they are listed in the NCAA record book.
The cheese champion in this quiz has to be the 1984 Brigham Young team. They were considered a mid-major and not worthy of a major bowl. They got to play a tepid 6-5 Michigan team in their minor bowl. Then they were crowned champions because they were the only undefeated team left. I am sure BYU had a good squad, but it would have been nice to see them play a top team in a major bowl.
Not only were they the only undefeated team, but # 2 and 3 both lost their bowls, so it was BYW vs 12-2 Washington. Not only did they beat their opponents, it was by three+ scores. I am sure that BYU should have been in a major bowl, but they were clearly better. Washington and Florida each had FIVE less wins, and only beat one ranked team each, respectively. I guess BYU did deserve that title, as did SMU should have two years prior
I am not a BYU fan, nor do I live in Utah, but that squad is not overrated. Not only did they play few little-known teams, but they had an excellent coach, a star QB, and a great squad
