It was actually quite a wild guess for me, as well! I speak Hebrew and 'Sin' is the Hebrew word for China, so I just said 'for the gags let's see if it works', and it did!
As we have come to (and continue to increasingly) understand that the mind and brain are the same thing, these two fields have begun to significantly overlap.
No, etymology studies specifically the origins of a word, lexicology is the studies of words and the relationship between them ( and yes it can sometimes involve etymology)
You may laugh at bartenders who are mixologists 'geek', but most bartenders can't make a decent cocktail to save their lives, so if one can they deserve the credit.
On one hand, if you can't get a bachelors degree or higher in it from a university, it's a bit dubious as an "-ology". On the other, I totally support curious people out there learning and bettering themselves and others.
I remember in 11th grade authoring an epic poem about taking a massive dump one day, in an attempt to provoke a response out of my unflappable English teacher Mr. Crowley. He wrote in the margins "you're not the first scatological poet, you know!"
I blanked too, for several minutes there was complete silence in my head... only saw ology ology ology...
The last minute things slowly started working again and ended up with 15/23 without the blank I would ve gotten atleast 3 more (zoology ecology and cosmology...) (and might ve guessed cosmetology and sinology, I knew it was china written in a different way, had no time to try anything though)
Yup, e.g. in my country the victims of communist massacres after WW2 are excavated by archaeologists (with participation of police and others of course).
The definition of archaelogy given here seems a bit misleading and threw me off track. It should be the study of ancient cultures and/or human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the analysis of artifacts and other physical remains. I mean given that, most people will recall Indiana Jones, right?
I got a few from my experience in the Science Olympiad, what with events titled things like Ornithology and Meteorology. Somehow missed Ecology. And also, where's Herpetology?
OK, got Kremlinology just because I was at the end and just started typing in everything popularly known as Russian or USSR related. That said, I never heard of it so I googled it and Kremlinology is actually only related to "Russia". Sovietology is related to "Soviet" I think the clue should be changed as they are NOT the same entity. Yes, Russia was part of the USSR, but the USSR has t's own history separate of Russia.
As a Greek, this was very easy. Although I would never guess scatology. "Scata" actually means s*it in greek lol. Coprology or even apeccrinology would be more suited imo.
"You got an Ology! That means you're a scientist! That's almost like being a doctor!"

Good quiz though.
