Red light district is just a generic term for an area of legalized prostitution and they occur all over the World. Although Amsterdam has the most famous red light district in the World, it's actually called De Wallen.
"during the American Revolution", I dunno, that's like defining legions as "top-level Roman units during Caesar's conquest of Gaul", excludes most of their history
Excuse my ignorance, but do you mean that they historically referred to themselves as Redcoats? I always had the impression that was just an American put-down.
Yep, they did - common usage across much of Britain's colonial territory and in the wars fought through that era. And it's not much of a "put down" either...
Not to start a discussion, but you could say the same for the color/teint of people's skin. The colour is what the color is. Same for hundreds of other examples, once a word has been used in a derogatory way eventhough it is exactly what it describes.
Sifhraven, you just *ended* the discussion! What Sif said is exactly what I meant. There are many, many ways that we could describe a person or group of people that would be technically correct, but that *nobody* would mistake as being meant in a neutral way.
It's sad to see Red Baron as less than 60% correct. I happen to be a teenager but I only knew the answer from reading Peanuts cartoons. Sad to see that more people don't do this...
Not sure why you assume that's the only way older people know about him. If you are referring to me, my comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek, although I do enjoy listening to the song during the holidays. Most of us oldsters had grandparents who lived through the war (or fought in it) and we heard their stories first-hand.
I'm German, and I did get the answer, but in general, I don't feel very inclined to revere people for being good at killing. I'd rather know poets and thinkers.
No little red riding hood? I am sure this list isnt conclusive, but when asked to think of things with red in the title she would score very high. (Maybe 50% will say red riding hood and the other 50% red wine hahah)
I was going to ask how she shining one could read red if in a mirror not reb, but I checked it myself. it was in capitals (and the r was written the right way round) in case anyone wanted to know.
I also think about the red devils (belgian soccer team), the red flames (Belgian female soccer team), the red lions (belgian grass hockey team) and the red panthers (belgian female grass hockey team) ;)
There was a brief time early in their evolution when they were known as the Red Stockings. My husband's nephew was called up from the minors to pitch for the Reds a few years ago. He couldn't sustain his place in the majors, but at least he went to the show. He said the Reds were a good club to work for.
and they had the good sense to change it back afterward? Then why are we still stuck with that incredibly stupid national motto? E plurubus unum was so much better.
How the f^%k is anybody supposed to know a very specific scene from a very specific movie if they haven't seen it? I turned off The Shining halfway through because I was bored to death.
Don't ask me how I know this...
the Internet or your teacher know this
(I am not a person who can read your mind).
2) Very little of the English army's "entire history" fell within the red coat uniform.
