Isn't 'Apollo' the god of the sun and 'Helios' the Greek word for sun? Either way, I think 'Apollo' should still work for 'Sol'...unless I totally have Apollo mixed up with someone else. Any help?
As with most things mythological, it's complicated. They were originally two separate and distinct gods (though technically, Helios was a Titan), but they got conflated sometime around 300 BCE-ish. Similarly, Apollo's sister Artemis was not originally a goddess of the moon, but she got conflated with Helios' sister Selene (Luna, to the Romans.)
Apollo is god of the sun, but Sol isn't Apollo's Roman name, seeing as it stays the same. Sol belongs to Helios, Titan (generation before the gods) of the Sun
By your logic, Hecate and Selene's Roman names can be Diana? Just because they are the deities of the same thing, that doesn't mean they are the same gods.
Apollo was the god of the sun, every day he drove a chariot across the sky dragging along with him the sun, whereas Helios (Sol) literally was the sun.
"Titans" is just a word to refer to the Gods that ruled the world before the Olympians. So Titans are Gods, just not Olympians. Moreover, Gaia is not a Titan but a Primordial Goddess (before the Titans!)
I can just imagine showing this to my friends, who are almost as hardcore fans of Rick Riordan as I am and seeing their reaction. Unless this was because of auto-correct.
I never knew that Cronus and Chronos are two different gods/titans. And I thought I knew quite a bit about greek mythology ... Learning something new every day :D.
ItsDaBunnyYT I believe there is a reason for restricting the addition of Apollo, because in Greek it is "Apollo" and in Roman it is still "Apollo." Like Nemesis and Janus (the goddess of Revenge and the God of doorways), Apollo's name does NOT change from the translation from Greek to Roman.
Demeter is a greek goddess and one of the Olympians, Roman name being Ceres, maybe add her to the list as she is sort of a female counterpart to Dionysus/Bacchus
Yes! Finally! Someone who understand this. However, latinization is not Roman equivalent. Those are different. Also, idiots that don't understand wouldn't understand.
This quiz really would benefit from having a yellow box, otherwise it is rather pointless. I think many people have some names floating around, without really knowing what they belong to. I think most people taking this quiz are atleast partly simply listing whatever comes to their mind and see if something sticks
I think the fact that Apollo in Rome is Apollo in Greece is the best possible reason for adding him to this quiz! It would make for an interesting comment thread of people who missed the answer anyway! If you do that, definitely yellow-box the quiz!
Same! I loved reading that series as it was coming out. Still love reading it. And the books combing the Roman mythology in helped even more. Heroes of Olympus, weren’t they?
Having Ancient Greek class might actually be useful for things that aren't etymology like I just guessed Helios because that's Greek for sun, and it worked.
And it's numerous little side books.
And fan fiction.
Not Olympian but Gods anyway...
