I believe they all now work in German. I learnt them in German too. I don't know how to translate Mecklenburg-Vorpommern anyway.
+1
Level 63

Mecklenburg doesn't get translated, and Vorpommern becomes 'Hither Pomerania'. Safe to say it's slightly shorter in German.

actually, "Vorpommern" is sometimes Anglicised to "Western Pomerania". No "hither"

I think you should not let it count when only the first half of the double names is typed. The latter part is proper to the Land's name just as much as the first part is. And:

While Vorpommern and Anhalt are smaller than Mecklenburg and Saxony respective,

Palatinate is about same size as Rhineland,

and Westfalen, Holstein and Württemberg are even bigger than their counterparts.

It's a little bit like letting Papua count when Papua-Neuguinea is meant or letting Alsace get through for Alsace-Lorraine.

But it's nice to see that their original names are accepted.

Can you maybe include the abbreviations of the states? Like BW for Baden-Württemberg or NRW for Nordrhein-Westfalen (At least those two are used more often then saying the whole name. Thanks

Sehr gutes Quiz! :)

Didn’t quite get them all... when you get all the former DDR ones straight away but forget some of the biggest West Germany ones ‘cause you haven’t studied them as much #historystudentproblems ;)

I got every one of them right apart from Sachsen-Anhalt.

Kudos for accepting their German name!

(I'm from Hungary and that is how we learned them in school)

as a german, the english translations are so confusing like why translate names? if they dont have actual words in it(like "north rhine westphalia) then translating makes no sense? f*ck languages 😂
+4
Level 59
Oct 10, 2020
North is definitely an English word, Rhine is the English word for Rhein and Westphalia flows better than Westfalen in English. “North Rhine-Westphalia” sounds better than “North Rhine-Westfalen” in English.

Level 82

Does it? Perhaps, where there is an English translation that is accepted and recognised it should be allowed, along with the actual name. Not all names have a recognised English translation, so the might be a fair compromise.
