Yea the worst movie ever made.. (sarcasm). I seriously don't get why people call things awful when they are not in their personal top 10. Things that are not perfect or fitting their desire are immediately awful.., makes me wonder how they treat people and their general approach to life.

out of the millions movies made, for something to be awful they really must be terribly unimaginably bad. A movie isnt awful because you find it boring or dont like the plot etc

I wouldn't call Avatar awful. Is it James Cameron's best? No, I don't think so. Is it his worst? Also unlikely. Piranha II exists, after all. Overrated? Yeah, probably. I was more impressed by the special effects in T2 than in Avatar. But I wouldn't go so far as to call it awful.

Why are there so many people who are so proud of announcing that they haven't seen or don't like this movie? Is it just because it was the most popular highest-grossing movie of all time? Reminds me of those people wearing "Trendy people suck" t-shirts back in the 90s... irony being that those shirts were extremely trendy.

Depictions of skeletons are also apparently forbidden. Magic: the Gathering cards featuring them that are reprinted for sale in China must have the artwork redone so that there is some flesh still on the skeletal form.

Good concept! If I was to add some it would be video game consoles since they were banned from 2000 to 2015. As for specific games I recall Hearts of Iron being banned for depicting Taiwan and Japanese satellite state as being independent.

The Beijing culture bureau released a statement lauding Bieber's singing and musical "talent," but said that he was banned due to unspecified "bad behavior." They also said that they hoped he would mature with age so that he could be enjoyed by a wider audience.

Though it's not known for sure what behavior of Justin's put him on the bureau's radar, it has been speculated that it might have to do with him posting a selfie from a Japanese shrine that celebrates war criminals who participated in the rape of Nanjing and other atrocities in China and Korea.

Incredibly surprisingly, Animal Farm (and also 1984) actually isn't banned here. I've heard explanations ranging from "both books are about Britain, which means that Britain is a dystopian hellhole", and "animal farm is just a book about a farm", which are... interesting arguments. The Chinese version of 1984 apparently removed all references to Mao though. Also, I have no idea what you mean by jasmine being banned. Jasmine tea is pretty popular here. Unless there's a specific type of jasmine that has been banned here for some reason that I don't know about, I don't think that one is true either. Everything else checks out this time though, as far as I'm aware.

For those too lazy to search, there were pro-democracy protests in 2011 that some people were calling the "Jasmine revolution". Thus the ban. Which I guess was temporary.
+5
Level 65
Oct 5, 2021
Perhaps the clue should specify "jasmine flower" (given the extreme popularity and historical significance of other jasmine products like teas) to avoid unnecessary confusion. A clearer indication that some of these bans were temporary or have since been lifted could also be a good idea (it is stated clearly for some clues but not others, and worded vaguely in the description).

Jetpunk is NOT banned in China as of December 2022, as I'm writing this comment in my home in Beijing, China :)

A few notes:

1. Though the reference to the Tian'anmen Square Massacre is strictly banned, the mentioning of the square itself is not —the founding of PRC is proclaimed by Mao on Tian'anmen Gate in 1949, and the once-a-decade military parades are still held at the square (last edition was in 2019)

We Chinese are more used to refer to the incident by its DATE (June 4th) instead of its location, as many other events with substantial historical significance also took place at the Square.

2: The works of George Orwell are not banned.

The one child policy was not a ban (neither was it really enforced, which is why when you meet many PRC nationals, they do have siblings), you paid for the second kid's education, healthcare etc, and a fine for a third.

There was No Banned in China for Avatar(a 2009 film directed by Cameron). It was the highest-grossing film in China at the time. According to Wikipedia, it is still the 36th highest-grossing film in China now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_(2009_film)

I strongly suspect that the view thought Avatar has been banned in China confused the film with the animation Avatar: The Last Airbender, whose sometimes simplified as Avatar. Despite no clear evidence indicating the animation has been banned, its subjects include religion, Tibet, and ethnicity, with the possibility of a ban.

some of these are misrepresentations or lack context.

Chinas one child policy was exempt for ethnic minorities and people in rural areas.

Falun Gong and the Dalai Lama are arguably rightfully banned because the political movements they represent are harmful right wing extremist ones, which is often ignored in western media.

The internet bans can easily be circumvented with VPN's, which many chinese citizens do.

The bans on references mainly refer to public comments with large reach. Punishments for e g internet comments are rare.

From the chinese perspective Animal Farm and Chinese Democracy are hostile foreign propaganda. I'm not american but I'm pretty sure america doesn't allow "death to america" chants from Iranian propagandists in their country either.

Cryptocurrency is deservingly banned. It provides zero positive contribution to society and is very bad for the environment.

All in all there's still a lot wrong with all of this but it's not nearly as bad as many people say
